Default Oyster Card - Pay as you go??

Need some advice.........

Me and wife off to London soon, now without an Oyster card the tube gets damn expensive, £4 each per single.

So I get us an Oyster card each, I have to pay a £3 deposit each and it looks like the minimum credit is £20, so an initial outlay of £46?!?!?!

Have I got this right??

Anybody know if its possible to share an oyster card, i.e. I pass through the barriers, hand it back to wife so she can pass through??

Any help appreciated as its not explained on the transport 4 London site.

Cheers,

Matt.

Minimum credit is £10.

£4 is taken off when you swipe in and £2.50 refunded when you swipe out - so net cost is £1.50....and that's how they get the full fare if you don't swipe out - you've already paid the full fare!

The max amount you can spend on an Oyster card in a day is capped at the daily travel card rate for the zones that you travelled in.

Not sure if sharing a card would work...might do I suppose

No, you cannot use one Oyster card for two people. You'll end up being max fared all the time and when you get caught by tube staff its all too much hassle especially if the gates don't open on the exit!

Get a travel card.

I've been looking at this too - is the travel card just the normal ticket thing you get at the stations..?

Aren't these for 3 days or something..?

The Oyster card technology isn't 100% reliable yet. If the system thinks you did not touch in and touch out on a journey you get charged the maximum fare. Have it happen twice and you might find that you have insufficient credit left on your card. If that was at the end of a tube journey they'll charge you a £20 penalty fare.

My card's record listed a journey starting at 2.10 am (not finished) when the station was closed. An impossible event. London Transport will never pay compensation for taking your money wrongly. If you wait on the phone line long enough they might refund the charge back to your card but you'll be dealing with an ignoramus to achieve it.

If you are using the tube, I would get travel cards for the day or weekend. You know you won't be swindled then. Oyster is very good on the buses though because the charge is 90p a journey compared to £2 cash and you still get capped at the bus pass daily rate.

Enjoy your stay!
