We found out this week a friend of ours has been diagnosed with an aggressive, non operable, malignant brain tumour and then my mum rang to say my Grandad has Prostate Cancer todaym so not a good week.

I rang my Grandad and he is remarkably matter of fact, "I am Eighty Six you know", I reckon he will be ok for now based on how he is, still well but our friend is in hospital and we are really concerned for him.

A lad a work told me his cat has cancer as well, what a **** disease it is, we nearly lost my cousins lad to Meningitis and thats a **** as well, I can kind of get my head round my grandad being ill but our friend is still fairly young (50) and has young kids, I sincerely hope he will be ok.

Terrible thing to succumb to at any age. It is desperately unfortunate to be afflicted by cancer but it is a lot more common than you would think. Still doesn't soften the blow when it does happen. Just be there for your mate, moral support is very important at a time like this.

Its not nice, in this day & age there must be something we can do to fight this "disease".
Not been a victim of it personally but i have had friends who have had family members suffer from it.

IMO everyone needs to contribute something out of their monthly income to cancer research to do something about this. Be it £1, £3, £5, £100, whatever you feel you can afford. I doubt if there is anyone that has not been affected. I dont contribute at the moment, but I will be changing that shortly.

My stepmum is Edinburgh's biggest fundraiser for Teenage Cancer Trust. She raised £51,000 last year and it will be more this year. I've helped out a bit with charity runs etc.

Well worthwhile.

My Dad was diagnosed with Prostate cancer nearly 4 years ago now. They gave him 9 months to live at the time. It was already advanced and in his bones. The new generation of cancer treatments are very good. I'm sure he's going to be with you for quite a while yet.

So sorry to hear this. As Einstein said, moral support means a lot.

Cancer treatments are improving all the time. I have donated my slides and medical info to Cancer Research. Even if they get the tiniest piece of information or anything. It will be worthwhile.

All my best wishes to you J4CKO, it is a horrible disease. I lost my cousin to ovarian cancer 4 years ago, she was only 32 and my Mum is going through breast cancer at the moment. She is being really positive about the whole thing, which is the best attitude to have. Keep your chin up and take care.

I am sorry to hear about that J4CKO. You are right, it is a terrible disease and believe me it is a bit of a shocker to be diagnosed with it. They are so much better at dealing with it these days though but even when they reckon you are cured you spend the rest of your life wondering whether it might return. At least they give you regular checks for 5 years to see whether you are still alright.

I hope it turns out well for the people you know.

Sorry to hear about this J4cko, again moral support will do a lot in helping, I never really realised it at the time I was going through my treatment, but it without it, it would have been so easy to have given up

Les, do you still think you may get it again, it is an interesting point, I have had it twice and sometimes it does go through my mind that I may get it again, and make me wonder about the old addage 3rd time lucky etc (or more so unlucky if I did get it again)

I dont think about it so much these days, but certainly in the past I used to think about it more, now its just the odd occasion it enters my mind

The good thing about this webiste is we give advice, take the mickey, argue, give/get infractions etcetera, but when the chips are really down on a personal basis like this, everyone gives their support in a sensible and caring way even though probably the vast majority of folk don't have a clue who the person is.

So, J4cko, take heart - cancer is being beaten on a daily basis and lots of people can and will support your friend as I am sure you will. Don't be afraid to laugh with him and cry with him . . . and make sure he knows you love him as a mate even if it seems awkward telling him. We Brits aren't very good at that kind of thing, but it does help.

I had a Type C tumour which means that some cancer cells got through the bowel wall into the Lymph glands. All that lot would have been removed in the op and the Chemo should have finished any strays off. That is why it is always in the back of the mind and I am grateful for the ongoing checks Sonic. Doesn't mean I don't stay as positive as possible about it like you though.

Sadly this disease still takes those we love and care for from us in big numbers, but the percentage of those who can be cured is ever increasing. I know there are those on here (like myself X2) who have been diagnosed with cancer and have been treated successfuly.
I'm sure we all look forward to the day when all types of cancer are curable, so give to the cancer charities they do wonderful work.
In the meantime those who are suffering need your support. J4CKO I'm sorry to hear about your friend and your grandfather.

Sorry to read this. I lost my auntie to a brain tumour. She was given 6 months and lived for 2 years. She was still in her forties. I still get angry thinking why her when she never smoked, drank very little etc... Just try have fun times as much as possible with your friend and grandad.

Cheers for all the support, it does help.

Will go and see my grandad one night this week, they live a fair distance from me so its not easy to pop in on the way home, he seems ok, considering, just waiting for some decision on what they will do, he is a bit confused about what the consultants are up to, he has been examined a few times and they have given him a date to turn up at hospital but no idea of for what.

The other chap, no news at the moment, its kind of more difficult than my Grandad who is actually well, he just isnt, though we arent best mates we do socialise my wife is good freinds with his wife and my eldest son with his, so its difficult as I dont want my lad to say anything to upset his lad as I am not sure how much he knows. I just hope there is some better news this week

As for the cat, well thats a bit easier, goes to cat Heaven on Wednesday so is getting made a fuss of.

I had it amogst other places, in the lymph glands too (mainly in my neck) the Chemo did finish them off, as I had it twice in a two year period, I had scans and blood tests afterwards for the next 7 years (every 6 weeks or so) and when they stopped the scans & tests I was actually quite upset, as prior to that I knew I was being checked and any re-occurence would be picked up and caught, and after they stopped I was/am now back at the same risk factor as every other individual

So I took great comfort in the tests and for some time after a lot of thoughts did go through my mind about a further re-occurence, only the 3rd time maybe finishing me off.

However I no longer think that, and take comfort in the fact that I have survived this long that I 'should' be ok

Cancer treatment has come on a long way now J4CKO from when I had it (and indeed my Grandad, he was too far gone to be treated though) I donate when/where I can especially for Cancer Research, and i know roughly how much my treatment cost at the time

I do hope its come far enough to help your Grandad and your friend

Well, our freind has not woken up since Sunday night, his wife is at another freinds (who does legal work) drawing up a will as he doesnt have one.

My wife was inconsolable last night, the news doesnt get any better with every text she gets, not even any glimmers at the moment, hoping (nor religous, I dont pray) against hope that he wakes up and they can do something to give him a bit longer.

So the message from me is, they might not be able to do anything for you but you can do stuff for your family just in case, its a bit morbid but, draw up a will as soon as possible and keep it current, and if you have dependants make sure you have good life insurance.

I had a lover who had ovarian cancer . She recovered intially but unfortunately she developed secondaries in her liver. She also was bi polar and fell into a depressed state which she never recovered from.
She hung herself. Everybody loved her - when she was manic . Funny , sexy - I mean unlike any female I have known . All wasted . Terrible waste.
