Default How cr@p is York to drive in/through?

Went over today from Scunny, around 55 miles, of which 20 on the M180, and M18. Leaving out that the roads were FULL of buses, lorries and cars towing caravans, trailers etc etc, the journey was awful.

It still took around 1 hour 50 each way, of which lots of time was spent crawling along in HUGE queues to get through traffic lights that seemed to be on red for 5 minutes a time. Buses had priority over EVERYTHING too.

What a Godawful place it is now.

I tend to avoid York these days. Find the traffic awful most weekends, and the council run car parks are a complete rip off. It's a shame, because the City Centre is really nice, compared to the alternatives of Hull, Leeds and Doncaster (for me)

The 'ring road' near Monks Cross and Clifton Moor is a complete joke. Not sure I'd consider it at all in the lead up to Christmas. Tend to find the A19 backs up towards Selby quite often as well.

There is of course "Park and Ride" from the Designer Outlet, but that doesn't work too well either with 2 kids, a push chair, a load of shopping and fighting against everyone else trying to get on the bus.

York is fine, been through several times last month or so..

You want to try Oxford no wonder its economy is failing as you can't even park close to spend money.

mind you I live and drive in London so Yorks like two pensioners and a horse and cart to me

Driving in to York on a Saturday afternoon provides more than enough justification for shopping online or going elsewhere.

The place is always rammed though, so I don't suppose either the council or businesses are bothered?

no, but residents do. driving isn't too bad - I just don't drive into town during the week. weekend are ok if you know where to go
trouble is when we need to head for Leeds, it can take us 40 minutes to do 2 miles along the ring road

the shear number of tourists is a PITA, especially when you pop out for a sandwich, and have to queue down the street. My idea of resident only tills hasn't taken off yet...

council car park don't cost any more than most I've seen elsewhere, depending on which you go to. The long stay near the station starts at about £12 though

in York's defence, it was designed slightly before cars where a problem!

55 miles in 1hr 50mins through a busy city?

-20 miles and say 25 mins for your motorway jaunt, meaning you travelled 35 miles through York in 1hr 25mins?

What are you complaining about

It takes me an hour every night to travel 7 miles through Aberdeen. Now that is what you call traffic Dual carriageway all the way aswell.
