Default EDF Energy... anyone else had a phonecall?

Just had a weird phonecall. May be legit but then again. See what you guys think.

Phone rings, withheld number.

Guys, asks for me by name and then introduces himself as EDF Energy and says our bills is outstanding and tells me the amount. I dont know if the amount he said is the amount of our current bill, we usually pay when the reminder comes, cos were useless at that kinda stuff.

Anyway, he asks if i have my credit/debit card available to pay the outstanding amount. It was about £80+. I said no and that we hadnt received the reminder. He told me, they are trialling a new scheme to reduce their carbon footprint and arent sending reminder bills straight away but instead are ringing people. I asked if i would still get a reminder and he said yes, so i told him i'll wait for that to pay.

Just got me thinking after i come off the phone, that i had no idea that he was infact from EDF. Fair play, he knew my name and gave me an amount of money he said my bill was.

Anyone else had these calls from them?

Probably totally legit but you never know.

Sounds fishier than a fish market to me. Not that hard to get a name for a phone number and then make up an outstanding amount...

  • Phone EDF, on the number that should be on your existing bill, to ask if they operate such a scheme.
  • If not, phone the police to report an attempted scam/fraud.
  • Then phone BT and report the withheld scam/fraud caller and ask if they can trace the incoming number

...that way, any crooked scheme might get stopped.

Alternatively, do nothing, and potentially let loads of other people get ripped off!!

NOt had that one myself but the last time my CC ompany called I refused to give them any details and called them back myself, that way I was in control and I knew who i was calling, IMO it is too risky to give any details out to people you do not know where they are calling from.
