Default Any dance music experts?

Hi,

I've eventually got my new HiFi system set up!

I want to get hold of the dance music I used to listen to (mainly on mix tapes and pirate radio) on CD to enjoy it properly. So what I'm after are compilation CDs. Problem is I don't know what half these songs were actually called!

The sort of music I'm talking about is drum n bass, jungle, happy house and hip house from the years approx 1989 - 1998. As an example here are some song/artists I can remember

Richie Rich Salsa House

Doug Lazy Let it Roll

The Scientist Take them to the cemetary?

Early Prodigy stuff

Later stuff:

Omnio Trio

Ray Keith

Origin Unknown

Arsonist

Clubs I went to were 1) World Dance 2) Utopia 3) Labyrinthe 4) MoS

DJs around were Groove Rider, Fabio, Mickey Finn, Ray Keith, LTJ Bukem

This is obviously a very short list of titles I can remember quickly. Can anyone suggest any compilation CDs out there now that might contain some of this stuff?

Thanks

Deep, we've probably bumped into each other at sometime in the past I've got lots, will have a sort through and post a list

Edit to say have a look on one of the music download sites where you can preview a bit of each track, that's what i do to find out what the tunes are before I buy a CD.

Also check out the Hed Kandi 'Back To Love' series, all the classic house and UK garage tunes from '87 on are there

I've got a CD called 'Classic To The Core, volume 1 & 2' which is all classic old school hardcore from '91 - '92 and is excellent for a trip down memory lane

I've also got one called 'Garage Pressure' which is a compilation of classic garage house anthems from approx '92 to '94 featuring stuff like Robert Owns, Alison Limerick, Inner City, C&C Music Factory etc.

MoS did one called 'Back To The Old Skool Club Classic' which is a bit cheesy and features greats such aas Livin' Joy, Strike, Gat Decor etc.

Another MoS one I have is 'Back To The Old Skool' which is more happy hardcore and commercial stuff but has a few good track son like Jaydee - Plastic Dreams etc.

Were you the one with the white gloves and a whistle?

Have you got them on vinyl or CD?

Thanks

No, didn't have a whistle or white gloves but was always the last man standing on a podium or table at the end of the night waving my arms in the air like I just didn't care

They're on CD but I now download a lot of old stuff for the car and my iPod.

For your classic DnB/Jungle compilation I'd recommend Jungle Massive mixed by DJ Hype, came out around 2001 but has the ones you'll remember.

You've listed a pretty big timeline, but one that I was pretty heavily involved in

DJ Dunk (former World Dance promoter/ticket agent)

PS. The Scientist track was The Exorcist.

Thanks.

Not a big garage nor trance fan. More early house, hip house dnb and jungle

Dunk, yes it was called Exorcist! Any other compilations you recommend and any idea where I can get them?

Scoobychick, which site do you use for downloading the old stuff? I want CDs not MP3 but the site may let me have a little listen to stuff and help in the choice of cds.

Thanks to all

Deep was that the Labyrinth in Dalston? I was there from time to time in 1992 or so. Don't remember that much though
Can't help with the music compilation though, I've only got a few of those old school tracks on MP3 myself, for example -

Orange Lemon - Dreams Of Santa Anna

Ahhhh man! I'm a massive old skool music fan, I'm 27 but have knowledge of real old skool house beats from as far back to the late 80's, which means I would of only been 8-9 years old! but I even loved it back then, having 2 uncles as DJ's I was brought into it from an early age, now i follow in their footsteps and have been DJ'ing myself for about 10 years now.

Then as a teenager my older sister was a bit of a raver so I used to listen to nothing but Dreamscape and Fantasia mixed tapes, dreaming that I was old enough to go to The Sanctury Warehouse in Milton Keynes for a Dreamscape bash, DJ Dougle was my favourite. Then went onto a bit of jungle and DnB.

My biggest involvement in music was garage though, as that was my era for clubbing, going to places like Gass club, Camden Palace, Colisseium (spelling?) Leisure Lounge etc. I Still love it, brings back soooo many good memories when I listen to garage, especially the 'proper' underground early garage from the mid to late 90's. I went out with my mate in his motor on saturday night and he was listening to some old garage c.d pack, Exposure, and I just had to nick it off him! Listening to it on the way to work this morning and was in my own world nodding my head constantly without control of it shouting out 'Tune!!' to myself every now and then!

Can't beat it, there is no other music that properly gets me going like that.

Deep, the MoS download site has long previews Ministry of Sound Download - the essential dance music download store

Also I search out old skool compilations on Mp3Sparks.com and have a listen - just for the longer previews obviously

I think I've now got most of the old tunes that I loved back in the day (a lot from Hed Kandi - Back to Love series) but there are still some rare mixes and other stuff that allude me. My ex fiance started out as a DJ on Dance FM back in the late '80s then went on to DJ at all sorts of places during the '90s including my favourite club Garage City, we also used to run a night in a bar one night a week and so amassed a superb collection of tunes. I know he still has the enitire collection and I'd love to get my mitts on it

Me and my mates used to frequent that place in the 90s

Head kandi - As mentioned - Back to love compilations are a good start point.
You would probably like 03/02 which is all stuff from 89.

My clubbing days are over - cant mix it with the kids, now I am officialy middle aged. Started in 79 with level42 and light of the world etc - clubbing started in 84 for me with the real old school stuff and I retired in about 01 LOL

I'd just get the MP3s to find out what the songs are called, then look for the CDs.

I can confirm that The Exocist by Scientist can be found on the album Rave Generation vol1 by Dino Records, though that's likely out of print now. Another good set to look for would be the "Best Of Rave" compilations by Low Price Music. It was a set of 4 CDs each with the full length mixes on, so only 12 songs per CD. I got my copy when it was current and it cost me 12 quid. Bargain!

Early Prodigy stuff shouldn't be too hard to find. I think The Prodigy Experience is still in print (I still see it in record stores) but the ideal one to go for is Experience Expanded since the second CD contains the more popular, more danceable remixes.

For happy hardcore, the first 4 Bonkers albums are really good. They go a bit downhill after that, which isn't really suprising since happy hardcore itself went downhill around that time, resulting in the chav crap that is popular now.

If you're into Oldskool, you may also want to look into the new "Hardcore Breaks" scene, from what I can tell a bunch of people have basically decided, "hey, modern rave is ****, lets make oldskool again, only with better equipment". There are samples for download on sites like hardcorebreaks.co.uk

Bonkers is still going today, 17 was out a few weeks back, Brisk, Ham, Sharkey, Energy, Scott brown and Marc Smith all go b2b over three CDs.
Sharkey's mix on bonkers 3 is widely renowned as the best of the entire series and with good reason. Freeform was just being born at this time and there is some truely amazing music on it.

As for the modern stuff, ther has been a recent resurgence of vocal based tracks at the expense of actual kickdrums, which, as someone who likes to dance to them, is somewhat dissapointing. But some people are still putting out good stuff, Seduction is putting out some amazing bouncy hardcore and Gammer is the hottest talent of the moment, able to do things that ae beyond belief.

yeah I've tried to get into breaks, but I've given it up as a lost cause. I dont even know why, but the music sounds so mundane compared to the old stuff and try as I might, I just cant dance to it! Strange eh?
