Default Price of Eggs

A bit of a random post!

Has anyone noticed how the price of eggs has gone up by what seems like nearly 100% over the past few months?

Used to get a decent box of 6 free range, large ones for 85-90p and now its more like £1.60+

What is going on? That sure as hell aint 2.1% inflation.

I get all mine from my neighbour who keeps and breeds free range chickens on her smallholding, she charges me a £1 per half dozen and they're awesome, far, far nicer than supermarket free range

I keep chickens - well the kids do - 3 fresh free range eggs a day - boy do they taste better than any ones bought from the shops.

If the price goes up much more, I'll get myself a chicken!

This is going to sound like a stupid question, but do chickens lay eggs regardless of whether there is a cockeral on the scene? Never really thought about it.

Obviously the cockeral would need to be there to get some chicks.

Global wheat stocks are at their lowest for 25 years and the price has doubled, hen's feed is mostly wheat so if the price of eggs doesn't rise to cover the cost then there won't be any eggs as the farmers will all go bust.

Expect the same to happen meat in the near future too.

A sensible answer at last Now about those egg laying hens

I think I may have figured it out. They dont have cockerals in those little coops that the poor blighters are forced into in factories, so they cant need the cockerals

I don't think you do, a mate of mine bought 4 chicks and they just started laying eggs when they got old enough, he never had a ****, or at least he never showed it to me.

Chickens start laying eggs when they are old enough, its called "point of lay"
Cockerel – male
Hen – female
Add the two and you get chicks!

Do you kill and eat your own hens? No way could I do that. One minute the poor hen is minding its own, scratching around for some worms and then bam.

I get them from a local farm for £1.60 a dozen. Significantly better than the supermarket rubbish which always seem to have pale yolks and weak white. Golden thick yolks and healthy looking whites, although I am beginning to question the 'free-range' claim as when I called the other day they were emptying the barn and it looked a bit battery-ish to me. Maybe the ones sold on site are from the wandering free-range hens ?
