Question Safest method for on-line purchases?

Tend to use my main debit card at the moment but concerned about identity theft type fraud. I'm wondering if I should use a separate credit or debit card with a low spending limit?
I do use Paypal where I can rather than the debit card, I'd like to think this is a little more secure - not talking scams here though, just identity theft fraud.

Anyone else got any thoughts or advice?

I don't really trust paypal that much either. I use a card with a low limit, and try to only use that one online to keep the rest secure.

Otherwise I just try to make sure I only use it on a secure connection and a trusted computer, and trusted websites. It's worked for me so far (touch wood)

Safest method would be to get a prepaid credit card.

There's a TV ad where one of the card companies claim to offer protection when buying on-line. It may be Barclaycard (or Capital?) but someone will know. Worth considering?

I was done for £1500 after using buying from Internet. Gave details on phone. Card then used to pay off stuff by using phone so actual card and PIN not required. dl

I've seen schemes which generate one-off unique credit card numbers, which only work for a single transaction of a pre-defined value. Whenever you want to make a new purchase, you get a new credit card number.

Always use my Credit card. Never Debit card.

You are covered against fraud with credit cards. Probably harder to get your money back from the bank via your debit cards.

Only buy stuff over the internet via my work computer (firewalls, anti-virus etc) rather than my home PC. Wouldn't trust that at all.

Ah the old Internet fraud myth.

You are far more likely to have your card defrauded in a shop/restaurant etc. than you are online as long as you are sensible.

Make sure you have a properly protected computer connected to the net and only buy from reputable sites over a secure connection with a trusted certificate. Golden rule - if anything seems fishy walk away.

As a bit of an anecdote to this I was out for a meal with a customer once who banged on for ages about credit card fraud being rife on the net and then happily let the waiter take his card away to pay the bill. Nothing happened, but it made me smile.

As much as possible, I try to keep my banking and spending separated.

I use a visa card for more or less everything and try to only use the current account card at hole in the wall ATMs. Then I pay off the CC every month from my current account.

In theory, at least, any fraud on the CC isn't my immediate problem, as I still have dosh in my account. I have the chance to have a discussion with the CC company from a position of wealth, not skint.
