They shall grow not old,
As we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them,
Nor the years condemn,
At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We will remember them.

Is this some kind of holier-than-thou one-upmanship?

Well I observed it, in a mission in India, giving away my worldly goods and kissing leprotic babies.

I'd also quote a trite extract from Binyon for extra credit but someone has already beaten me to it.

No. Just that's where I happened to be at 11am - sorry if you find that offensive.

It wasn't the location I found offensive it was the apparent need for people to have to announce that they have observed the silence to one another in a more and more outlandish way as if to try and prove their worth. If I hadn't posted I feel sure someone would have claimed to have observed the silence from the god damn Somme!

This isn't about you or the other posters, this is about taking time to reflect upon what people have given up for you and you should keep it between you and your maker.

I get the same turn of nausea when I see the public sympathy outpouring threads on this site... post after post of insincere tripe and a mass bundle to be the first to regurgitate a sentimental passage from a poem or suchlike.

Just observe the silence properly, reflect upon what people have given up and keep it to yourselves. Please.

Or alternatively you could keep your views to yourself, let others quote poems etc, not read the thread, and quietly seethe at other peoples views.

Would make for a rather boring forum though.

Anyway best dash got to get back from the cenotaph, hard work handing out the wreaths.

Ps Mark good to see the british stiff upper lip is still going strong.

Although I agree broadly with what you said in the post, there is no way that you can say that any sympathy demonstrated to those who have suffered for any reason is insincere tripe. That is a gross insult to those who have tried to make someone feel better over some disaster or other.

You might think it makes you seem manly for making such a comment, but in truth you should apologise deeply.
