M25 Variable Speedlimit - caught when not in operation?
Hi Everyone
sorry if this has hit the board before - would like a few opinions on the following...
coming back from heathrow this evening - clockwise on the M25 - fog signs are on - (however there is little to no fog) - no speed limit is being indicated on the gantry signs.
and i get flashed (twice) - while possibly doing a speed over 70
i thought that the variable speed limit cameras were only in operation when the signs were showing a new speed limit - has this changed/ am i wrong/should i be worrying?
any advice - other than the 'you should have been driving like miss daisy' on a clear Motorway greatfully accepted

They can still operate to catch those over 70 mph even when they are not displaying a speed.
That's why I still use my (soon to be illegal, apparently) old radar detector as it lets me know which are active.

Mate I have had them flash on before and got nothing through. I go through them most nights over 70 and they dont flash. I did hear someone say it might of been clarkson if you go over 92 then they do flash.

Cheers Guys
this was last night so the road was clear hence the ability to get above 40
i havebeen through on other occaisions without a hitch - wasnt focussed on exactly where the needle was so difficult to say whether i was over 92
will see what happens

I have thread confusings. If the variable limit isnt "on" then the limit is 70 as on all motorways?
Ipso Facto getting flashed doing over 70 is to be expected

Yup - agreed - no variable then the limit is 70 - however i seem to remember when they were first installed that there was some debate on whether the cameras were allowed to be active at any other time other than when displaying a lower limit - say 50 - something on human rights etc etc and the police using them just to catch motorists out and make money - (hang on silly me they do want to make money) - but that was along time ago so just wanted to see where people thought i would stand legally

When they were first installed I knew one of the software developers on the project. He indicated that you would need to be doing 'close' to three figures for them to triggered when a speed limit was not indicated and it reverted to 70mph.

But wasn't this to not overload the system with thousands of drivers to process, and once they'd automated the system and could process them all, they brought the limit down?

I think you do get the odd "random flash" from those cameras. I've been flashed a couple of times doing LESS than 70, on an empty M25 (shock horror), with no restriction in place. I've never had anything through the post though.
