Budapest is a nice city. Been there a lot, as the company I work for has a factory there.
In terms of hotels, I always stay in one of the Ibis hotels, very reasonably priced and excellent value for money. They have I think five in total in Budapest.
I mainly stay in the "Ibis Heroes Square hotel". It is a few miles from the centre but there is an excellent underground network so getting around is no problem. The main advantage of this one is, it’s just had a full re-fit so it is very modern.
If you want something more central there is the "Ibis Centrum" which as you will guess from the name is right in the middle of it all.
In terms of do's and don’ts, if strip clubs are your thing, I would stay clear. Not been in them myself, BUT I have heard they are free to get in but cost a fortune to get out off in one piece.
I would however visit "Fat Mo's" Music bar (www.fatmo.hu). The food there is excellent, and usually they have live music on most days of the weeks.
Hope this helps.
