Cost of prison...
£50 grand for a year per prisoner!
I am quite shocked, as thats about £135 a day....
If my maths is right that means it costs about £11m a DAY to run the UK prison service..

WTF. £50k a year per prisoner? Never. How'd they get to that conclusion? Thats more than the average wage for a man to look after his family

I do know that the Government spends more money on a meal for a convicted criminal than it does on school children. As exposed by Jamie Oliver.
As well as providing our criminals with TV's, Dvd's etc etc.
Small cell 23 hours a day, and basic food. Make crime punishable, and not the walk in the park it is now.

Spent some time in prison myself . . . .maintenance contract though!
Was talking to one of the "managers" (?) and he was saying that remand prisons (Holds Cat A, B & C prisoners) cost approx £36k per inmate.
Specialist Cat A prisons are more, but Cat C and Cat D (open) are a lot less as they are "working Prisons" and earn money through prisoners working for outside companies (often within the confines of the prison) A lot of these lower grade prisons are farming based hence why they are in rural areas.
Was a really interesting chat we had, enlightened me to things I didn't know about.

This has almost nothing to do with it, as some elementary maths would show you. As with most things, the vast majority of the money goes towards paying the staff.
And the cost was £25k per prisoner more than ten years ago, so it doesn't surprise me. Still, at least prison works.
