I'm a wimp. The sea was too cold for me outside Lisbon in August after two months of 30+C, I wouldn't go near it in October. Not sure if the Algarve is so much warmer. Remember it's the Atlantic, not the Med.
Yes thanks. I'm not talking about whether its 'possible' to go into the sea as an endurance test but whether it would be a pleasant holiday experience for my family(including a one year old).

I take it the answer is no!
Thanks
In the Algarve it is ok to go in, the weather is usually good.
From Lisbon upwards, forget it!!!
Even in the summer typical temps. in the water are 16-18 ºC in the Lisbon area.
One of the things i disliked about Portugal was the sea. The Atlantic ocean is not the warmest of seas even in July/August in fact it was fooking freezing.
Kids who will play in virtually any water even hated going near it, too cold.
As any surfer will tell you sea is at its warmest until late november.
Portugal weather can get bit dodgy in November - its their month for highest rainfall. Have been once or twice in November and sat in torrential rain for days. Hence why its very cheap.
Thanks. Portugal is out then I think, I like the sea temp to be pleasant
As others have said just move round the corner to the med, will be fine in early October, particularly if you go somewhere that has a long shallow beach.
I have been on the sea off Anglessy during the winter, you turn blue but its amazing what you get used to if you get in, its getting in thats the trick bit, best done like tearing a plaster off, i.e. quickly.
