Red face I am so out of touch..........

My daughter started part time work today in an upmarket clothes shop.

Paid a pittance but when she got home just now she was wearing some quite smart clothes with the shop logo on. I joked about her buying stuff before she had really started there but she told me she was obliged to buy them and they dock the money from her wages.

I did my Victor Meldrew act but both my wife and daughter told me this was common practice in shops now. I had to promise not to make a fuss or phone anyone!!!

Is this common practice? Seems sharp practice to me d

Most places that require you to wear a uniform supply that uniform, that I have come across anyway. I trust she got a suitable staff discount?

I worked in a Gents outfitter 19 years ago.....it was the same then.

You get discount, and were expeted to wear the clothes you sell.

Definitely a common practice, though when I was at college a friend worked at Next and was given a certain amount of credit to buy clothes from the shop.

Yeah she got a 75% discount so that was fine but it's just the principle of the thing!

=======

Been a funny old day here because her brother started his first job today and at exactly the same time. But he doesn't have a good degree like my daughter has and is working for the County Council. The irony being that he is on 4 times her hourly rate plus travel expenses! There's a lesson here somewhere but I am still trying to work it out!! dl

The lesson is: run away from retail unless you're Phillip Green.

I have to wear a uniform but all I have to supply is underpants and socks!
