Default UK airspace Violation by Russian Long-Range Aviation!

Hi,

Have just seen on Skynews that the Russians have been testing the UK's QRA ability, just like in the good old days of the Cold War!

This has been going on for the last few weeks, QRA Coningsby (29 Sqn Typhoons) did the business, and there are some nice piccies floating around out there showing them shadowing a Russian bomber!

Suprised the Norwegians did not participate intercepting the "Дальняя Авиация, Dalnaya Aviatsiya" TU-95s on the way down.

As, by there very nature, these are sneak attacks, these aircraft cannot be "squawking". Anyone here know how these flights mingle with ATC? Has it just been luck and large skies that have prevented an air to air collison, or do the Bears have radar that can track our commercial jets?

It's highly likely the Russian aircraft will have radar, and I don't think many commercial airliners have a 'stealth' capability

They have onboard radar to monitor civilian flights, but never contact UK ATC as they approach our airspace, hence they are tagged as red air and QRA issued

They even tested a nuclear powered TU-95, in theory it could of stayed up for a long, long time.... but the crew could only stand 48 hours up close and personal to its onboard reactor! So the binned it...

Pete, your secondment to the diplomatic service was obviously a waste of time.

How successful do you think this particular use of force tactic is working in Iraq?

Do you think it will really "shut the Ruskis up" or maybe provoke something much more serious? Like rocketing gas prices for a start, at the very least.

Stop trolling, you daft old pillock

Richard.

"Norway is following the increased Russian activity in the far north with interest," he told the BBC News website.

He said the Russian flights were not causing alarm in Norway. "Our systems are adequate," he said, when asked whether Norway was bolstering its security in the area.
