I'd though about Malmaison and the Great Eastern already but as I'm spending my money and not my companies I want something cheaper. It's not like I'm there on holiday with a loved one.

I've checked out the Thistle Barbican it's a possibility.

Another question- where's best to stay within easy travelling distance of the Barbican but offers some decent shops, bars, brasseries etc that might be open in the evening and where I'm not going to be at risk of meeting people with knives and guns?

hotel saint gregory is decent.
about 12 mintues walk to barbican.

close to hoxton square/spitalfields which can be reasonably lively.

there is also a brand new travelodge just around the corner from barbican.
not sure when its opening though as it isnt at the moment
