About time. only 5,500 brits in Iraq.. Thought there was more than that!
Good to see Gordon giving the fingers to this disaster which was helped by his 'friend' Tony.

I cannot imagine we are going to desert Iraq like we did in the first Gulf War.
Civil War is what will happen and we will have innocents blood on our hands.

You're right. This is the direct consequence of Blair's personal crusade. Our armed forces were designed for the use of our nation's defence in the event of a foreign threat. Not to be exploited for one man's personal quest for glory. It's over now. He's gone. His agenda has gone. They are achieving nothing there. It's time to move on. Put some distance between us and the disastrous Blair Era.

We went in there and their whole country has changed because of it.
If we just pull out we're responsible for what happens. Whether you agree or not with the initial intervention, our country will be held (partly) responsible for the aftermath.
Our armed forces are utilised for the security of world peace, not just protecting our little island.

Well actually, I don't believe it's a party political issue.
Nobody else would have been as messianic as Blair was about his 'crusade' against Iraq. To use a technical term - he's a wacko....

The "great" british army had it's **** kicked by a small bunch of religious zealots using decades old technology and now they are running away.
Who'd have believed it eh? I seem to remember most people on here thinking invading Iraq was a good idea and that it would all be over within weeks. Instead what we have is the british army forced to a humiliating retreat.

Its just very sad that after all this interference in Iraq the people are worse off. Thats what 'they' say.
Most would like a return to the 'stability' of the Sadam regime.

Love the way people on here twist things in the extreme to their own political views.
The British troops have vacated their last base within the city of Basra and handed control over to the Iraqis. They have been withdrawing from the city for a number of months already.
The troops leaving today are for the most part moving to the British base at the airport and will remain there and could re-intervene in Basra if deemed necessary. The overall number of troops we have in Iraq is not set to change significantly in the next few months.
OK back to the arguing

168 of our boys and girls have been killed in Iraq and 74 in Afghanistan.
The very least Brown can do is bring our troops home before any more lose their lives in this unecessary, illegal war. Blair should be in the dock at the Hague rather then sunning himself with St. Bono on some donor's yacht.

They might be 'your boys and girls' but they sure as hell aren't mine. You play with fire you get burnt- tough titty.

They have retreated from Basra central to the airport 7 miles out of the city where they will still be a target for insurgent rockets and grenades etc. Control of Basra is handed to the Iraqi army and police and our forces will remain in what the clever chaps in No 10 call an "overlook" mode able to step in where necessary.
PSL is right, if we leave Iraq there will be a bloody 3 way civil war and his hero Billy and the idiot Bush are responsible for starting all that up. Therefore we are morally responsible to try to stop the further murdering which would take place after the allies dextroyed their country and the infrastructure for their own political self aggrandisement! This is the price we are paying now and for a very long time for starting an illegal war against the wishes of the electorate of this country! I do not think for a moment that Flash is about to pull out of Iraq.
In answer to FP, we should not see ourselves as an international police force but we should mind our own business and our troops should be in existence to defend our own country and protectorates.

They are no more 'our boys and girls' than the religious maniacs who have beaten them. At least they didn't go there in my name or on the behalf of anyone else who believes in justice.
