Default Convertibles - Astra, Focus, 307... ?

Also posted in other marques... I had a search and couldn't find much.

Thinking of getting a convertible, but also want a "bit" of performance, needs 4 seats (don't ask why it has to be convertible... it just does ).

Drove an Astra Twintop 2.0 turbo today, not bad, not WRX territory I know, but it's not supposed to be. I liked it, nice car.

Wife also like the looks of the new Focus convertible, (not very powerful, 145PS), plus the 307 (180PS version) looks nice.

So, we are in the £20K and below region, new, or nearly new. She wants convertible, (hard top), I want compromise between looking nice and having a bit of oomph.

Any suggestions/comments are welcome.

John

A used BMW 330 Ci Convertible would be perfect!! For 20K i'd keep well away from french cars and definitely Vauxhall!!

Thanks Paul, but has to be hardtop, BMW isn't. Interested in your comments also, any reasons? (Never had French or Vauxhall before).

French And Vauxall along with ford is like Pis###g money into a colonder. You get splashed and it all runs away leaving an unpleasant smell with nothing to show. A £20k french car is worth less than £10k after 2 years.
Try for an Audi S4 or RS4, or you may get an early Aston hardtop convertable for that money.
Take a look at whats going on Autotrader.

Hi JPL,

If your lucky some BMW's come with the hard top but are seperate from the car so you have to find somewhere to store the roof which could be a pain. My fiancee owned a 02 Corsa and although it was reliable (which is rare) it felt cheap and dull to drive. She now owns a mini and the difference is amazing. French cars and Vauxhall just have reliability issues.

Convertibles are a waste of money, especially going by this dismal summer. I have access to a renault megane hardtop convertible and trust me when I say this mate its just not worth it at all going by the sun you get in this country. Get a propper car instead.

If you want performance, you're wasting your time with the 307, my mrs bought one, nice enough car to drive (considering it has no roof) but performance definitely not!

But that's called depreciation, happens to all cars, whether it be 30% or 50% loss after 3 years. Basically I treat it like an ongoing cost, be it £200 or £400 per month, I'm always going to pay it, so what I lose at the trade-in doesn't matter that much. I still pay the same each month when I go to get the new car. Anyways, I'm after some thoughts on the Astra turbo convertible....??

the guy isnt getting it. Performance and convertible doesnt go together unless you either buy used or buy expensive. French convertibles dont do performance or reliability or build quality. That megane I have access to has constantly got things creaking and bits falling off.

The only half decent performance convertibles have either a soft top or a removalable hardtop.
