Is There Something Wrong With My Radio?
Evening All,
Bought a new portable radio from argos today, only a couple of quid, just something to take fishing. however, when I try to tune it in I have a bit of a problem - if I put my hand round one side to move the tuning wheel, all is ok and I get a clear sound. but when i take my hand away it goes all fuzzy, if I put my hand near it again, it becomes clear. I have also noticed this with my radio alarm clock. Is this a fault with the radio or is it because it is cheap. Could someone please explain why this happens, I guess it is something to do with interference and background radiation.
Thanks,
Scott.

but it also changes to a better sound when my hand goes near the radio? is there anything to prevent this happening so i can tune it how it will normally be - un touched?
Thanks,
Scott.

You may be in an area of poor reception and when your hand goes near the radio internal aerial the capacitance between your hand and the aerial combine to improve the receiving power of the aerial through a combination of tuning and effectively a bigger aerial. This would be the same for your radio alarm.
The answer is to fit a bigger and higher aerial, or move house!

Thanks everyone, I have found a way of tuning it a little more effectivley, and thanks for the advice!
I don't want to spend any more than a fiver for it to get dropped it the water, or to be stamped on!
Thanks,
Scott.
