Default Closure of Motorways?

Hello

Why are motorways being closed so easily these days? I have been stuck in two traffic jams in the last week where there was an incident that closed the road.

It never used to be like that: A lane or two, yes. But it was get the wreck to the side of the road and open it up, not 6 hours of closure.

A rant because of this (which is pretty weird, but CLOSING the motorway?): M40 closed after motorcyclist shot dead - Yahoo! News UK

it is a crime scene. forensics need to thorougly search the area, it will be no good for evidence once reopened. this is a do it once and get it right affair.

That I can accept. The place is a crime scene and has to be treated as such.
However, the M25 closure on Friday, I think it was 10 hours, for an overturned recovery truck and lorry carrying plasterboard, was a joke.

Wasn't someone taken to hospital with severe injuries?

If so, and it's not clear if they'll survive or not then a full collision investigation and scene of crime investigation has to take place.

That's after all the casualties have been removed which can take a couple of hours.

Then once the investgigation is completed then the clearing up has to be done

If the motorway isn't closed following an accident, the traffic still comes to a dead halt....just because of all the rubber-neckers slowing down to 2mph and having a good gawp and 'ooh, look at that!' converstions with themselves
