Default Loft conversions

I may find a change in my domestic arrangements that means I need an extra bedroom and so am considering a loft extension. Problem is I've just finished an 18 month refurb of the house so everything is freshly decorated at great cost.
If I have a loft extension made will it wreck the rest of the house ie with dirt/dust etc? My loft space is filthy, full of really old insulation that seems to have perished/turned to dust!

Thanks

There will be some muck, it's enevitable, much depends on the deisgn you go for and how much can be craned up and loaded through the roof rather than having to come through the house. For the most part, having the workmen craned in is the key

If it's your mother, or mother-in-law, just bung her in an old folks home.

The worst combination - a freshly decorated house and then prospect of a loft conversion. The dust that is disturbed during the loft conversion process is terrible and takes an age to settle. Your freshly decorated rooms will soon take on a dull look, not to mention carpets.

Then there's the builders - does anyone know a clean gang of builders!?!?!

We did the loft then decorated a year later after the dust had settled!!

Thanks. I had heard that they do most of the stuff from the outside (ie via the roof) and then break through at the very end. Is this not true?

Yes this is possible, you wil need to discuss with your contractor (I would sugest a loft conversion specalist), you will fo course need full scaffolding to allow access from the outside. hey should bable to complete 95% of work before inserting staircase and making ceiling good.

Some contractors will want to break through earlier but this is just to sepped things ups.

Yes it will get messy as theres lotsa dust from cutting the wood etc and moving the materials up and down. I know this as we had ours done not long ago by my brothers company. Its not permenant mess though, i think all you have to do is just clean as much as you can after each day and you should be fine and also jus cover up your stairs or the route to your loftspace with dust covers which you will have to clean everyday and still hoover underneath.
