Default Baby names- choose with care.

An interesting article. Make the wrong choice and you may as well brand your child with 'chav' across the forehead.........

What a load of ****e. Only in America could you have a "professional nameologist"

and...

In the US the marketing men have gone one step further. I talked to Burt Alper, one of the founders of the corporate branding company Catchword, who hosts baby-name brainstorming sessions in his spare time for friends. “As a professional in the business, people expect great advice from us,” he says.

Alper called his son Becket because of “the crispness of the ck sound, like you have in Kodak”, and says his background in phonetics has helped him to identify why some words sit better with the general public than others. “Those consonances, the P and T sound, create an image or association of athletic dexterity whereas softer syllables are more emotional and sensitive – the Fs and Ss.

You utter, utter ****.

"Burt Alper" well you learn from your mistakes sounds like the lead up to a "burp"

The core point is quite a valid one- nowadays 'brand' is king, style is more important than substance and choosing the wrong name could be labelling your child a failure............

Of course cultural differences mean what works well in one country is probably a joke in another.......

I have to say, you would have to be some sort of imbecile to label/judge someone based on thier name.

I suppose pop stars/film stars have been at it for years, but then they have always been pretentious ****s.

As for the "p" and "t" sound suggesting "dexterity" and "athleticism" over "f" and "s", what a load of absolute bollocks.

Mind you, this came from an advertising executive, one of the top five most useless jobs you can do, so I'm not suprised.

Everyone makes judgements based on people's names. That's the point.

If I tell you that I have two people in front of me one called

Wayne Connor Tyler Boggs

the other

Julian Templeton-Smythe

and then ask you to tell me which one is most likely to have been a University graduate and public schoolboy I think you'd be able to make an educated guess.

Whatever name you have is your brand. Choose wisely and you could be picking a premium name, choose wrongly and your little one is Burberry........

isn't it amazing what people can find to do to avoid getting a proper job (like the 'Visual Manager' in BB)?!

Thr trouble is, these people invent themselves, proclaim to be experts, then gullible Joe Public things that because they exist, they must be needed.

Of course I would take a guess as to which came from a upper class family, and perhaps public shcool. But as for which is a University graduate, both of them equally could be.

I asked which is most likely to be. Of course both could be but I'm guessing young Wayne would more likely be

a> on the dole

b>in some low skilled manual role having not passed any exams

A good name is of vital importance. How about a boy named Sue?

I am actually finding it extremely difficult to choose any names for my bump

All the websites and names in a book we have been given either are absolutely awful, bizarre, exotic, too common or remind us of people we know and don't like etc Other than that, the name has to sound OK with the surname too, so it's not proving easy!

I do not want to end up with a chav named child

Tell us your surname if you like and I'm sure some of the great minds on here will come up with some good ones.

If not just try to avoid names that the scum give their children. I was unfortunate enough to see an episode of 'Jeremy Kyle' when I was in the UK last- it featured low lives and their children. Maybe watch that a few times and discount any names mentioned could be a start?

His surname rhymes with something quite rude

It begins with an "L", so have given up on any name ending in "L", if you know what I mean?

Also, there are a LOT of names in the family beginning with a "J" so don't want one of those names either, maybe I am just to fussy LOL

I know what you mean about Jeremy Kyle though, saw that a while back and some of the families are a little less than desirble to say the least! I wouldn't like a name associated with those thank you!

I am sure we will come up with some eventually, but wanted a few of each so we have a choice as to which suits the little one best LOL It's boys names we're havng more trouble with though

Not sure I would like peeps on here to offer name options, for fear of me insulting them by saying, nah, that's awful and they come back saying it's their name or the same of their child or other family member

I am sure we will find one eventually, although with names like "Storm" and "Wolf" etc it takes forever to sift through that rubbish to get to the half decent ones LOL

Don't tell em would be the best plan, I started one of these name threads some time back when someone I know gave their child what I believe to be a 'scum' name and wasn't surprised to find there were quite a few on here who'd labelled their child in a similar way.

I reckon another good rule of thumb is don't use the name of any famous people/their children unless it's something traditional.

So called modern names probably aren't a good bet either...........

A newspaper named me. I kid you not.

I was meant to be called `Anthony James ******`

My old man phoned up the Northern Echo to get my name put into the `Birth` section.

He phoned up saying my name etc, weighing lb Oz (or what ever I was).

Paper got in wrong and put `Wayne Andrew ******`

**** know where Andrew came from. Anyway my parents kept it as `Wayne Andrew` Apparently `Wayne` is now a Chav name, and I always had, when I was younger that I must have been named after `Wayne Sleep`

Would much prefer to be called Anthony.

According to the InftactMe charter, you do not have a university education, you do not have a job, or if you do, it is some low skilled manual labour affair.

Just out of interest stilover- did you go to public school, get a degree, masters or doctorate and do you do a manual job?

FYI if you want to blame anyone for saddling your name with an unenviable reputation try Harry Enfield- Wayne and Waynetta.........

We are going for old fashioned names for our baby when it arrives.

No chance of accidental chavving then!

Good for you bucking a trend, I'd imagine there weren't many other Waynes at school

I have to say I didn't meet a single one at the University I attended which is reputed to be one of the best in England.

To be fair, it's not a massively popular name, in my experience. I only know one, and he is an Electronics Engineer.

Which says what exactly?

In the group of people you knew at Uni, you never met someone called wayne. That must definitely mean no Wayne went to your University. Which was which one exactly? Scarborough?
