Question Simple Physics Question?

Can someone please explain to me how to work out this question?

Two cars are travelling in the same direction; one car is going at 30mph and the other is going at 50mph? If the first car is 10 miles ahead of the second car, how long will it take the second car to catch up with the first?

My mind is at a blank!!!

30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, car A (doing 50) will go 25 miles.
Car B (doing 30) will go 15 miles.

Since B started 10 ahead it will then be 25 miles from where A started, which is exactly where A is at that time.

Assuming the first car is travelling at 30 mph

then

30 mph = 44 ft/sec

50mph = 73 ft/sec

Velocity difference = 29 ft/sec

Thus Time to catch up = Distance/velocity

= 10 x 5280/29 secs

= 1820 seconds or 30 miniutes

LOL you don't half have to make things complicated.

The distance between the two cars is 10 miles and the speed difference is 20 MPH LOL

Now, what if the front car was an impreza and it had fuel surge for 5 seconds

The second car will never catch up. By the time he has done 10 miles (1/5 hour) the first car will have covered a further 30/5 = 6 miles. When the second car has done the 6 miles (6/50 hours) the first will have moved 180/50 = 3.6 miles, and so ad infinitum
