Default Recommend some nice wines?

Hi.

I'm entertaining some friends/associates in the next few weeks. They are all big wine drinkers. I'm a simple lager and Jack Daniels man

I'd like to get some nice wines to make for a pleasant evening. Anybody recommend some nice (white only) wines up to about 10 quid/bottle. I'm cooking Thai food inc fish if that makes any difference

Hardy's do a nice South East Austrailian white wine. Serves best with Fish & poultry.

Dare bet there are better one's out there, but it is a nice drop. Can't remember the exact name, but it is there better range of wines. £5 a Bottle from Tesco

A good Semillon-Sauvignon Blanc would fit the bill

Radcliffe's Pinot Grigio is really good. Readily available at Threshers/Victoria wine etc. Usually about £5.99.

Go to waitroses "fine wines" section, or even better the "cellar" section they have - Prices start around £12-£15 and go up to £60 but man, you can tell where the money went.

And you probably want quite a light fruity white - Soemthing like this Laithwaites Wine - Les Carrielles

If you're doing Thai, I wouldn't thank you for a glass of wine, a nice few chilled bottles of Singha on the otherhand

I prefer beer with Thai too.

Is it gonig to be fairly spicy?

Sancerre "cuvee jadis" henri bourgeios 2003... fantastic white, around £40 a pop, if you find any let me know so I can get another case

If it's Thai you'll be best looking at the New World wines rather than European. They tend to be "fresher" and match that sort of food better.

Best whites would be some NZ Savignon Blancs or Chardonnays or some Australia Semillons.

I'd go for some of this - white Rioja is superb wine for having with decent food, it's light enough to compliment food flavours, but has enough ooomphh (technical term ) for the flavours of the wine to get through.

Laithwaites Wine - Familia MartÃ*nez Bujanda Blanco

A little different to your grigio / chardonnay etc as well. Not that there's anything wrong with them!

AS kiwi said NZ and chile for sauv/blanc and france for chardonnay and aus if you are feeling lucky. But if you can find a Fruilli, Collio or Alto a Maggio Pinot grigio you can't really go wrong. If you can get a mersualt in price range then that will do as well. Another to consider is Verdichio which will taste good with foods that can somtimes mask the flavour of the wine..

Hmmm - Thai food is hard to match with wine.
You can actually get Thai wine which isn't too bad but I think I'd go for fuller flavoured New World wine rather than the more subtle (but very tasty) French and Italian stuff.

Oyster Bay (NZ) is usually about £8 and available anywhere - very nice and sounds a BIT like the much pricier Cloudy Bay!

I'd have a nice Singha or Tiger beer with Thai food but then that's not really what you're after!

Gewurtztraminer is often recommended as a good match with Thai food. It's slightly sweet and very aromatic, which matches well with Thai flavours. It's not to everyone's taste though, but worth having with the food. Also try Viognier, another floral grape, but not as sweet.

For wine to have before the meal I would recommend a couple of drier types - perhaps an oaky Chardonnay and a zingy Sauvignon Blanc. This should account for most tastes.

At around the £10 mark, I would go to Waitrose and try the following:

With the food: this Gewurtztraminer or, if you want to push the boat out a bit, this Alsace. This South African Chenin Blanc is also brilliant. Last, but not least, a nice Viognier.

Chardonnay: Catena, absolutely fantastic stuff, great balance.

Sauvignon Blanc: Not my favourite grape, so not as sure on this, but I've tried this Pouilly-Fumé and it's nice.

Thanks. I'll look at all the specific suggestions later.

Must say that I agree and prefer lager with spicey food, but I thought that was just because I'm uncultured!

Don't do a lot of white wine but Cloudy Bay is nice - apparently, as its difficult to get hold of.

Have a couple of bottles of Oyster Bay in the cellar. All I have in white, very nice though.

I think both brands are Australian - don't ask me I just drink the stuff!

Brown Brothers Tarrango which is a red, but served chilled is excellent with spicy food. About a fiver in Tesco.

A good lager is King Cobra. Or try Hop from Greene King.

If your Thai food is spicy then a dry Muscat wine would be my favoured choice.

Get yaself to Waitrose and get a couple of bottles of Montana Riesling [New Zealand] 2005 or 2006. It's fantastic and about £7 a bottle.

Oyster Bay Savignon Blanc is good too.

For Reds

Faustino V or try Laithwaites [Pinball is a goodun but anything by Redheads would do]. Also if you can find it Bellingham Shiraz is worth a try.

I suggest a couple of testers before you buy

Dry Muscat ??? I buy wine from 5 different suppliers every week and have never seen a Dry Muscat ?

Dry muscat tastes, well, grapey. It's better used in sweet wines like BB raisened muscat in my opinion.

I prefer Sauvignon Blanc blends with this sort of food... Semillion-Sauvignon Blanc would be spot on
