Baking a sponge
I love cooking and can rustle up some pretty impressive meals - I can even make killer pastry - but the humble sponge has always eluded me. I do exactly what it says in the book, but usually end up with a sad chewy biscuit. Although to be fair, it usually tastes great!
This afternoon I shall be trying again. I have the ingredients ready and am about to sally forth into the kitchen. Does anyone have any secret tricks I should know about before I start.....?

After putting the batter in the tin drop the tin on the worktop from about an inch or so up, I read this somewhere.
Also, what kind of oven have you got?

Am busy beating by hand. It's bloody hard work! I work on the principle that if you ever ask anyone what their favourite sweet treat is they usually say something that their granny made - and granny never had a food mixer! I'm a back to basics cook!
I have an electric fan oven - it's new to me so I'm hoping my previous disasters were to do with a dodgy oven.......

Hmmm I never liked using electric ovens, things never came out how I wanted them, I prefer gas, could this be the reason for the sponge not coming out as expected?

InvisibleMan might have something to say about that! I can pretty much guarantee when he sees this threrad he won't be late home from work. Unless I get another sad sponge. In which case it will have to be the blow job - again.

Surely after Erika Eleniak's performance in Under Siege all bets are off in that particualr category? I mean, you are never, ever going to beat it.

As an aside, I once had a playboy calender at work, during the less politically correct days. It had Erika Eleniak in it and she was in the full frontal position. I bought a packet of the then very popular scampi fries, put one on the nether regions of Miss Eleniak and left it over night. The next day I told one of the blokes at work my calender was a "Scratch n' Sniff" edition. He fell for it too.

Also, as aniother aside, Nigella Lawson, she'd get it, in a big way. Everytime I see her on the telly I am convinced the filthy minx just wants to **** silly and the cooking is just a pretence to get me into the kitchen.

I was always told that a perfect wife should be an angel in the kitchen and a ***** in the bedroom. The other way around doesn't hurt either....

Something to do with cakes and sponges.....
I recall screams and shrieks of anger when coming in from the back garden....
"Shut that door, my cakes are rising"
....
Maybe your humour is too acid and you're taking the rise out of them.
