Default tractors on the road at peak time (RANT)

coming home from the office today, turn off the dual carriage way and hit slow / non moving traffic. trickling along at 5mph, wondering what the hells going on! Get to a straight bit of road, I have a nose out to the right to see whats up, as far as the eye can see, up front & behind, cars, & what's up ahead ?? A bloody tractor !!! nigh on 2 miles of traffic caused by this metal barrier !!!

Get outta the damned way !!

I know these guys have to make a living, BUT, rush hour traffic and this idiot decide to go for a country drive. what if there was an ambulance or such trying to get past ? why choose this time of the day t move, why not leave it an hour ffs !!!

Sorry to rant but this really gets on my wick !!!

phew, needed that !!

I think that one solution would be to ban any vehicle that runs on red diesel between 07:00-09:00 and 16:00-18:00 (or maybe even more).

They get cheap fuel because they aren't supposed to be using the roads - but many farmers take the mickey by towing huge trailers of "stuff" at all times of the day when they really should be using proper road legal/licensed vehicles.

We had the Steam Engines clogging the roads up the other week, I saw 5, 2 of which were broken down.

I think the tractors have as much right to be on the road as anyone else.

Why will noone overtake them though? They just bunch up so you need to wait for a long straight before overtaking the entire queue.

You would have loved my mate then. He needed to move a bunch of stuff from his Uncle's farm to his place. Only they were on opposite sides of the town. They only had labour available for that day.

So they started first thing and ended up having 6 tractors all with massive trailers running through the town centre at peak time. They got the co-ordination wrong and had 3 empty ones meet 3 full ones coming the other way up the main high street. Total traffic chaos. I think he is in trouble if people work out where he lives

Also remember at this time of year with harvest etc (particularly tricky with the weather you are having) the farmers will often only have a set time with combine etc - waiting an hour for everybody to get home first is not an option.

You'll all be pi$$ing and moaning when the supermarket runs low on foods because farmer giles was parked up at the side of the road!

Bet its a CVT auto, can go like a rocket .....

Except when cold, where it stalls. Or in traffic where it does kangaroo impressions. Or when trying to pull away quickly where it bogs down. Or when it hits 60,000miles where the gearbox breaks.

Anyhoo, never had a problem with tractors, as you know they can't go any faster (unless its a JCB FastTrak) and their usuage is for business, cars, caravans and especially horseboxes on the other hand....

Look back at a dealer listing for 10/15 years ago and you'll not see many swanky town showrooms on there, mostly very rural areas.

The Legacy / Impreza were being bought by the farmers before they became popular performance cars

Oh, and whilst the vehicle in the picture may not look like a tractor, trust me, it's not far off

Not only tractors, I've noticed on more than one occasion when the traffic has been really bad in London that it's been caused by a street cleaning vehicle at 8:15am, or a rubbish truck at a similar time - the word thick/selfish doesn't quite cove it.

It is possible to make tractors a bit faster.

Not sure there would be many spuds left on the trailer when they get to market though.

Not so long ago I was going down the A10 to Ely and got stuck behind a tractor, got passed him ...........and was then stuck behind the tractor that was holding him up! ....not only that but this tractor was going slow due to the fact it was towing......yes another one, in a trailer! you got to laugh.

As Shark said - bloody horse boxes

They can nip around Epsom at 40 mph but as soon as they get on the road it's down to 15 mph

They used to do things earlier but people moaned that it woke them up clattering around in the early hours.

Can't have it all ways!!

Living in North Lincolnshire, I'm pretty used to agricultaural vehicles of all types and sizes on the roads at all times of day

Just this morning I was in a HYOOOGE tailback caused by a combine Harvester, trundling along a lovely twisty road at 15mph. I DIDN'T have him in the twisties as I was 10 cars back and driving a diesel Xantia

My eldest refers to tractors towing trailers as "Farmer F*ck with his B*stard truck".

Ahh a Lincolnshire lad....is it just me or are the roads in the whole district constantly infested with horseboxes??

They are responsible for me doing umpteen car overtakes, and me gaining a reputation amongst the lads as a bit of a nutta behind the wheel

Fact is, it was a Impreza, and it seems like they were solely built for overtaking slow vehicles in very short distances, and I was slightly peeved off at being stuck behind caravans, racecars on trailers and bladdy 'osses in boxes adding an extra hour to my journey time
