Default Vat charged on non vat items?

Just made a purchase via fleabay

price was ok for what i wanted (bearings)

i saw that it said vat would be charged on the items (fine no probs there)

but when it calculated the final fee, i see the vat equates to vat on the items & vat on the postage..

now i thought postage was vat free, so can they charge vat on a non vat item?

Mart

Postage is classed as a service therefore it has VAT

VAT is charged on postage although I think if the item is zero rated then there is no VAT on postage either.

It maybe that the cost of packing is used as an excuse to charge VAT.

VAT is charged on the total amount (Postage included) unless the goods are zero rated, then VAT isn't added to either, to the buyer, if exempt from paying VAT.

You need to make sure on eBay that those charging VAT are actually VAT registered and aren't out to fiddle you for an extra 17.5%. Ask for a VAT receipt and if you don't get one with your goods then it's up to you what you do next.

We always charge VAT on delivery charges.

We PAY VAT on couriers (city-link, DHL etc).

We do not pay VAT on royal mail post.
