Charity Bags coming through your letterbox
Anyone know any inside info on these?
Do your donations (clothing and the like) really go to the charities specified on the bags, or is there some kind of Mister-Big-Middle-Man making a killing out of this little "business"?
We seem to get 5 or 6 a week pushed through our letterbox...

Read the small print, most of them have nothing to do with any charities whatsoever, just made to look like they might be charity collection bags / leaflets. Nothing illegal about it provided they're not claiming to be an actual charity.
If in doubt contact the charity direct and ask if anyone in your area is authorised to doing clothing collections on their behalf. I'm sure they'll put your mind at ease.

Usually use them as rubbish bags
There are a couple of genuine ones near us us (local charities) but alot of them I haven't heard of or belive alot of the money raised is not going where it claims (like alot of charities in general imo ).

When i have used them, I have taken them to a charity of my choice myself rather than leave them out to be collected
I have heard of a lot of cases where bags have been put out and gypsies etc have taken them, so I would rather take the bags myself than have that happen, at least that way your stuff goes to where it's supposed to

If it doesn't have a registered charity number on it then bin it. These will be done by people looking for vintage/valuable clothing to sell on eBay, believe me there is big money in rare old clothing.

If it's not a charity I know I'd use them for rubbish.
There's a British Heart Foundaton shop over the road, and every few weeks they receive a lorry full of these bags to sort through, so they do get it.
Heard from an insider, that contrary to popular belief, most charity shops don't wash clothes before selling them. Eugh!

Sadly more business ones than charity ones. Have you noticed how the collections for both just happen to be on the same day (so the business gets the clothing regardless of the bag used).
It has been featured on watchdog, or something similar.

A lot put the Vat number on the bag in the vein hope of some people mistakign it for the registered charity number. I'd rather burn my clothes than put them in one of these bags...
If folk want their hand me downs to go to charity put them in a bin bag and take them to the local charity shop (but not Oxfam as they are more of a business than a charity too)...

We have a few but normally Great Ormond Street etc...with the charity number on it..
the others normally forget to pick the bags up for days on end - they obviously can't be that much in need of the donations!
