Question Facebook - solve the mystery for me?!

OK - I do feel as if I am the only person in the country that has no clue how Facebook works!

As far as I can tell I can only search in networks or groups that I am member of. This seems to be a rather odd limitation.

I have managed (I have no memory of how) to join the Leeds area group (I live near York) and of the groups that I am interested in I cannot connect to.

For example I can only join corporate groups if I have a corporate email so ruling out most people I work with as I run my own company.

Of course I could be completely wasting my time in even thinking it is worth joining!

Any views would be welcome (cos I will get them whether I ask or not )

You can search for anything, just put a name in the search and it will find anyone on there all over the world with that name or similar.

Not sure what your doing wrong but Im not restricted to anything on Facebook, all seems pretty simple to me tbh.

You are right and I missed out a key point.

I want to search in networks that I have an interest it but am really struggling with this.

I put a name in and I get 573 people from the USA and I am actually only interested in the ones in the UK or even better specific areas (except when they have particularly cute pics )

I am guessing to be useful I need to narrow down my field of search but I seem to be stuck in the Leeds network and I don't even live there!

I think you are using the Friends option at the top, this gives a limited set of options for finding (US only?) friends. Instead use the Search function at the left side and simply put in the email address or name.

That got me too for a long time - I thought you had to be some member of a secret club to be able to have friends (or is it that I have none :-) )

I still think that Facebook and social networking is a bit like the emperors new clothes.

OK, just logged into Facebook, clicked on Groups (left hand side) then on the next page in the top right you get the search groups options, I just typed in York and got 500+ groups (obviously New York etc all in there too) but then you have advanced and filter results to play with.

I dont get what the prob is? Whats your IQ again? Only playing.

Maybe, maybe not. Find friends who you went to school with and grew up with is good. enables you to share photos easily and tag friends in them. Its genious IMO.

I'm trying to beat my g/f's friend score. I have 40 to her 35 at the moment. Havn't spoke to some of them for 10 years, but it keeps me occupied during the slow periods at work!
Facebook is so much better than friends re-united.

I just find this constant need to tell everybody what you've been doing or up to or that randoms can snoop on you. Sometimes it's nice to not be contacted by people. Most of the people from school who I want to stay in touch with I have and the others are probably married with a few kids now

I think these sites purely an ego stroking thing....

For me its good, easier to stay in touch with friends from Oldham considering Im 70miles away, wasnt so easy to stay in touch when I moved with lack of mobile phones back then.

Although I agree about the randoms snooping if theyre not your friend Going to have to tie my account down soon I think

My IQ is fortunately higher than the average number of members in the hundreds and thousands of completely irrelevant networks.

So back to square one!

Luckily I've been well preserved (read pickled), and I don't look old enough to be her old man.

I sort of work on the theory that anyone that I am interested in having as a freind I am still in contact with. If I lose contact with someone, it's usually for a reason.

Of course it's interesting to see what people you went to school with etc are doing now - But i'm not sure that making contact with them is a particularly good idea.

Dont get me wrong, alot of my old school friends I am still in touch with but its easier and cheaper to write on someones wall etc than sending text messages

Some friends I get to see once or twice a year if Im lucky, no harm in using the internet to stay in touch is there? not much different to MSN asking someone how they are etc.....

Myspace FTW, everything facebook is trying to be IMO.

Plentyoffish is working quite well for me at the moment though.
