You can keep their deposit if you want to, they entered into a contract which they can no longer fulfill.
You may want to ask yourself is it worth the hassle of having these people show up on your doorstep and kick off should you not return the deposit. You may also want to think about how much discount may be needed to get the deal done so that you don't have your car sitting around. You could also suggest that they get a loan, or borrow from a friend to complete the deal they entered into...and remind them how great your car is

if it looks like a scam and smells like a scam i probably is a scam - heard this one before.
Did they leave cash?
Did they haggle on price first?
Likely they are a bunch of chancers but might be nasty little *******, they know where you live so the pressure is on you.
Next time they call say that they can have their money back and to save travelling that you will send a cheque made out to a persn not to cash. That way you have a name and address.
That way, in two weeks time when your front door is put in at night and the keys taken you have a likley address for the Police to start with
Tread careful

send it her back even garage refund deposits if the deal falls through, at the end of the day a deposit is only an intention to buy if circumstances change like they have the person should be entitled to a refund.
You only have a vebal contract unless she signed some paperwork.

Just been through a legal dispute with a garage for the return of my £100.00 and the only reason I was successful was because the car was misrepresented.
I'd avoid the hassle personally.
Take it its the Pug Ian? If so they're always in demand and I'm sure you'll shift it without too many issues for the price you want.

Tell her that you'll refund her deposit less an amount for you to re-advertise the car, or see through the sale at the agreed price.
By placing a deposit she has show intent to buy and has entered into a contract (verbal or written). If she only said that she would buy and pleaded with you to hold the car then there's no contract. You are within your rghts to keep the money.
What if you had three other people who would have bought it and you've turned them away as it's now been sold. Whay should you loose out through her 'bad luck'?
