IIRC you can't provide evidence from digital cameras, but it's fine for the scamera partnerships as they can be trusted not to mess with them

Olly,

Software exists to certify digital images have not been manipulated in any way. This is available and in use by various parties.

example here

Canon Data Verification Kit DVK-E2: Digital Photography Review

No doubt the images provided by digital speed cameras will be similarly certified.

As an aside, IIRC, if the scamera image of the offender has to be manipulated in any way to aid recognition, it is not admissible in evidence and therefore easily challenged in court.

Exactly why they hate italic/small/whatever number plates- they can enhance them sure, but then cant use that as evidence or for identification.

I seem to remember a ruling about 10 years ago that a load of convictions had to be overturned because the images had to be enhanced to make them readable- and they were thrown out as a result.

Well I know that the Congestion Charging camera system has been fully designed with evidential requirements so they can prove all images have not been tampered with.

Why does anyone think this is an issue? There's nothing new here: ANY photograph can be manipulated - where do you think the expression "airbrushed out of history" comes from?

Yes, courts are happy to accept digital photos. No, they don't have to have been saved using special expensive bits of software. All they require is a signed statement to the effect that they have not been manipulated. Digital evidence is no different to any other kind.

Polaroid cameras are still popular for some photography, simply because they are a camera and a printer in one. Easy, and instant.

The idea that digital has some how created a new opportunity to manipulation photos is rubbish (as has been said above). Photos have been manipulated for ever (the ***** were very good at it) just digital makes it easier.

And there is nothing to stop you digitally scanning any print and then doing a photoshop job on the scan.

Richard.
