Work overpaid me, What are my right?
I was called into the office at work today and told that basically from April last year until may this year I have been on the wrong rate of pay and owe the company nearly £1200. Fair enough I suppose but its the way they want it back thats p@ssing me off. They asked if I could write a cheque, to which I lied and said I didn't have the money in the bank, then they suggested paying back £75 a week for the next god knows how long
I have a few £k in the bank but want to keep that in there asrunning the car, looking after the baby and Gordon browns council tax increases are are unpredictable things so its nice to keep some in the bank just in case.
Seeing imo, they were at fault do they have the right to dictate how much I pay back each week?or can I offer to pay them back something like £20 a week which is around what I have been overpaid by a week for the last 12months.
Fecking hate my boss and would love to tell him to stick his job up his fat **** and thanks for the extra cash might have to wait a year or too for that though.

I'd plump for £20 a week (their feckup in reverse)....
But as Matt says, was that £20 before tax or after tax, as I wouldn't pay them back the tax on the £20 (£4ish) as that went straight to Gordon Brown.

talk to them and say you can't afford that much a week and put forward what you think you could, I think they have to level with you somewhere, I don't think they can just say we want £1200 back off you or you pay it back at £75 a week!? But I'm no lawyer! Something like this happened to someone my mum works with I'll ask her what happened.

I wouldn't have a problem with that, just trying to find out really If they have any legal right to demand so much back a week or if its their **** up they have to agree to what I pay them a week (50p a week) we are talking a multi million pound company here not some small struggling business. so I don't really see why they need it back all at once.

This happened to a mate of mine recently, what with a rail serial ticket to London each day and other legit expenses stuff on top of regulary salary.
His net pay was confusing to anybody and, as his boss, I wiped out the deficit. It sorted out a potential problem for him and, in relative terms, meant **** alll to the company bottom line.
If it was the fault of payroll, then company should take the hit.
Richard.

I got hammered at the Police for this, our clueless admin manager took it all back in one go without any warning, leaving me unable to pay my bills, 5 of us were involved, we went ballistic and got them to pay it back and we paid it back over 4 months.
You wont get away with it, you will have to pay it back (or leave), two schools of thought, get it over quickly or over a year pay it back slowly but thats probably more annoying missing a hundred quid for so long.
