Default Problem with Ipod

Posted on behalf of my lass:

I am having problems with my itunes/ipod. For some reason my itunes music on my lap top has been cleared, I need to copy all the music from my ipod onto the itunes again. Is there a simply solution for this, I have tried directly copying it over and all the obvious things but none seem to work. Is there a solution without having to reload each album again. Also, when i do a direct select all then drag the lot over a error message occurs stating the The ipod cannot be synced, the file or directory ir corrupted and unreadable.

Try iDump, failing that it's a case of doing a system reset on the iPOD and re-rip all your albums again then re-load. In future do NOT let iTunes have any kind of control over your MP3s and look at getting Anapod explorer so you can get shot of iTunes completely.

iTunes will not allow you to copy from the iPod onto your computer, it's Apple's attempt at preventing piracy, the idea being you'd be able to take your friends iPod and copy all their music onto your machine. It is somewhat annoying to say the least. As mentioned by others Anapod Explorer will allow you to copy music from the iPod to your computer.

As for the problem you're having copying items onto the iPod, it sounds as though iTunes has an issue with the iPod, so I'd copy over the music, make sure it's all ok and not corrupt, then I'd perform a restore on the iPod, which will reformat it, which will hopefully fix the error you are seeing.

One major thing of note. When you restore the iPod, it will, at the end, ask you to name your iPod, and there will also be an option asking wether you wish iTunes to automatically synch your iPod. UNCHECK THIS OPTION, you don't want iTunes to automatically sync, you want to manually do this. If you leave this option enabled and your laptop loses it's music, or iTunes cannot find it for some reason, so the list is empty, then it'll think you have removed the music and it'll sync this empty info from iTunes to the iPod, removing all your music.

Saxo .. I used a program called Ephpod to copy all my music from my Ipod to a new PC (seemed easier than trying to hookup the laptop to it). It was free at the time, not sure now. (and my work does not let me access the website )

Not sure if it works with new Ipods etc etc but worth a look

Ephpod

There is a way round that, and thats to allow iTunes to enable disk usage.

Then you can access the iPod as an external disk drive through (I'm assimung you use a pc) windows explorer, then copy all the songs back.

Being pedantic for a moment Your suggestion still won't let you use iTunes to copy the files from the iPod. As you say, you'll need to browse the iPod as a disk and find the iPod Music folder (or whatever it's called) and copy that over. You'd need to then use the "Add To Library" feature to add the items into iTunes as the filenames will not be at all meaningful and tracks from the same artist album may not be in the same sub-directory of the main folder.
