I've just done a check on my PC on http://bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/index.html and its given it the following.....
Communications- 35.5 kilobits per second
How communication devices are rated. Kilo means 1,000 and mega means 1,000,000. Examples include 56k modem and 10Mbit Ethernet
Storage- 4.3 kilobytes per second
The way data is measured on your hard drive and how FTP programs measure transfer speeds. Kilo is 1,024 and mega is 1,048,576.
1MB file
download- 3.9 minutes
The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.
Any ideas as to how to make it run quicker? I've seen some of these bannners stating they can, but do they reallly work and is there a downfall to using them?
Thanks Nath

a surefire way to get a boost is to go broadband.
on ntl digital with a 128 cable modem in glasgow...
Communications - 531 kilobits per second
Storage - 64.8 kilobytes per second
1MB file download - 15.8 seconds
apparently...
"compared to all connection types worldwide yours is fantastic"
tried test again and second run was ever so slightly faster.
you might want to try these guys broadbandnuts.com... haven't tried them myself. they claim to be able to help 56k modems as well as cable and dsl.

WOW, I've just run the bandwidth place tests with me NTL Cable and I get the following....
--------------------------------------------------------
Communications
597.1 kilobits per second
Storage
72.9 kilobytes per second
1MB file download
14 seconds
The time it would take you to download a 1 megabyte file at this speed.
"compared to all connection types worldwide yours is fantastic"
--------------------------------------------------------
Why then is it that when I play Counterstike my ping is often worse than ISDN? and sometimes as bad as a 56kb modem?
Does NTL care? nope, it's not bad enough for them to even look at.

47Nat,
those banners maybe the ones advertising download accelerators. IMHO I don't think they are that good. If you want a speed boost, then as netclectic2 says go broadband. Failing that ISDN will be the next option followed by asking your telecom supplier to "up the gain" on your line. This hopefully will allow you to connect that just bit faster, ie closer to the max connection speed of 56k.
Matt, NTL 512k cable for me gets this:-
Communications = 810.3 kbits/sec
Storage = 98.9 kbytes/sec
1Mb File Download = 10.4 secs
Pings in games 20-50ms

For comparison, my ADSL (Home 500) showed:
Communications 415.1
Storage 50.7
1mb file download 20.2 seconds
If I trace Scoobynet I get no pings over 28.
We don't hace cable in these parts, but I'm still very happy with these speeds.
