Default Puppy Training

Hi all,

I understand that the seach function could probably answer some of my questions but i thought i would try & stop the tumbleweed from coming through

I get my new puppy (boxer) on Monday & i was looking for some tips on what to do with him.

The breeder has recommended i spend a bit of time with him when i get him too get him accustomed to me & also to his surrounding.

I have built a small pen in the garden just off the kitchen so he can run riot in there & also i have put a bed & some blankets in one of the rooms that arent finished so he can sleep in there until he gets bigger & gets out the chewing thingy.

Any helps & pointers would be brilliant.

Thanks

Stephen

I quite fancied a Ridgeback as well, but couldnt find a breeder local.

Lucky for me the guy i bought the farm from breeds boxers so i thought i was only right to go to him for this one.

Plan is to give the little one a month to 6 weeks to settle in & then get another dog, got it down to a doberman but dont know if they will get on, a ridgeback if i can find a breeder or another boxer.

If you have the time, you could do worse than walk a Guide Dog puppy.

The supervisor will teach you loads.

Hard work, but rewarding.

Google GDBA for more info.

Thanks.

I have told the missus & my oldest to keep contact to a minimum at the moment, i have also made sure that over the next few weeks that i am working from home so as to let him settle without too much upheaval (sp?).

I wouldn't necessarily advise keeping contact to a minimum, certainly involve the puppy and don't leave him locked up or away from the family. However, contact should be calm, try to pretend you are the adult dog, rather than an excited person who loves this gorgeous little puppy! And any undesirable behaviour should result in a telling off, no matter what, not a scolding, but a firm noise and contact, a push or a tap with one finger, obviously not with force, though.

To be honest I was too soft on my dogs when they were puppies, and it took me a lot longer to get them to a decent standard, although training is and should be lifelong, really. Firm, calm commands, correct him if he doesn't do it, put him where you want him to be, praise him. Tell, show, praise!

You can start training him on his first day home, really, but just be brief, no more than a few minutes at a time, building up to ten minute sessions two or three times a day by the time he is around four months.....

You should decide if you want to use food as a training tool or not. I don't, I use praise and a good rub behind the ears. There are always different pros and cons and opinions of each method. Things to do very early are collars, leads and baths, so he is used to all of these before he is big enough to be a handful. He should be used to a collar after the fifth or sixth time it's put on, and left on for a ten minutes, but never leave it on unsupervised when he's young.

Although you want to involve him with the family, be prepared to ignore him, you can't respond to every demand from him for attention and love. Ignoring him will show him you are dominant, and you should avoid eye contact, in fact not even look at him, several times a day until he gets bored of you, when you can then initiate the interaction.

NEVER, EVER RETURN TO HIS BED ON THE FIRST NIGHT! HE MAY CRY ALL NIGHT, BUT IF YOU GO DOWN TO HIM, ALL IS LOST! You musn't go to him until your normal time of getting up! He should only whine and cry the first night really, but no matter how loud, or for how many nights, never go to him! Think about putting a hot water bottle in a few towels, and an analouge ticking clock, so he can relate to his mums warmth and heartbeat.

Basically a little bit of training often will make all the difference. I'd strongly recommend a local puppy class, even if just for socialisation, and there are thousands of websites and breed specific books that will give you pointers, but the basic stuff should all be pretty simple.

Good luck and take anything expensive or nice from the floor!

Six sessions at puppy training plus a bit of extra work and I can safely say our 10 month old black lab is very well trained indeed.

Sits, stays, lies down, rolls over, comes to us, leaves food, drops anything, goes to her bed, all on command and is very chilled out.

Well worth the effort.

It was a definite sleepless night, the wee one whined all night. I held my cool though & didnt go near him till 6am.
He's starting to come out of his shell now, let him run riot just there in the back field so he will hopefully sleep through the night tonight.

If he does whine during the night, try wrapping a warm (but not too full or too hot) hot water bottle in an old pillowcase and let the puppy sleep with that...make sure it's bed is not in any draughts and is somewhere warm

if that doesn't work, try having something like a clock which ticks loudly n the same room

it's missing it's mum once it settles in and adjusts it'll soon be sleeping quietly - just give it a few nights

I read somewhere that puppy must not touch the ground outside until 2 weeks after his vaccinations in case he catches the Parvo virus? This can be quiet serious I think. Best check with your vet.

Exactly the case. The puppy should not meet other dogs that haven't been vaccinated until probably 5 days after his last injection also.

Stephen, the fields will be full of 'chance' diseases from all kinds. Personally I wouldn't risk it. Until say 13 weeks'ish old the puppy stays indoors, is carried outdoors or is supervised in a small garden area for it to do it's business.

Training is dependant on where you want to get with your puppy. I have a SchH3 GSD here with me that'll drive my vehicle if asked, and a 11 month old puppy GSD that is learning the ropes.

If you haven't got the time and you are serious then get a trainer to the farm, like I have for certain things in the past.

There is so much to training a dog that you can do yourself with basic knowledge but you can quite easily ruin a potentially good dog.

Either way take advice but before you listen to them, make sure they have references as there are plenty of wannabee dog whisperers out there.

Net forums are always handy but the same applies, talk can be cheap.

Some great advise there. Today he was left on his own for 2 hours & he seemed ok when i got back, he's a very excitable puppy.
