Air conditioning - help please?
My company need an air conditioning unit which is portable and has its own condenser either built in or whatever.
We don't have access to an outside wall in the building it is going into, and most of them need this.
Can anyone help with any ideas? I don't fancy another scorching summer in a stuffy, 40 degree box!
TIA
Clare

It's definitely d'oh!
I've had a few portable AC units but they all needed vented to the outside or a roof cavity.
I'm not sure there's any stand alone units that have no exhaust requirements.
Is a split unit an option with the exchanger in another open space or outside?

Whichever air conditioning unit you use the hot air has to be exhausted outside the room you are cooling, otherwise what's the point
At the company I used to work at we had in the office a couple of the ones on wheels, blowing out into the adjoining workshop through holes in the wall, they were next to fecking useless and always stank
Getting rid of all the heat belching CRT monitors (7) for flatscreen items actually had a more noticeable effect on the ambient temperature

We are in a shop unit which is long and thin with only a door to the outside at the front. The back of the unit gets extremely hot and there's no way of getting to an outside wall that's safe and secure.
We had a quote for proper aircon and it was £20K!
We have all flat screens already...
Any ideas?

Do you have a suspended ceiling where you could run ducting to the front of the shop?
Or failing that its the old crappy desk fan things!

No suspended ceiling either! Poo...
It is totally horrible in here in the summer. Because of there only being the door at the fornt, it makes air movement very limited! It's making me feel ill thinking about the summer again...

No, hence the problem. Basically the front of the building is at floor level, but at the back, we have to walk up a flight of steps to get to the back door. So effectively, we're under ground at the back.

Many portable units (especially domestic ones) have vastly overrated performance: Basically look at the recommended room size on the box/specs and halve it!
The large commercial/industrial units are better, but you pay a large premium for them.
ALL a/c units need some form of access to the outside, either for an outdoor unit, or to exhaust heated air. Otherwise it would heat the room up more than it it cools it

Could you lay a flexible hose UP the stairs? the hose would either be similar to a tumble dryers flexible hose (about 6" diameter) for a water air cooler or for a professional HVAC (air con) about 2" diameter.
Heat rises so the hose can easily go up a set of stairs and if its a flexible 'tumble dryer' type you can just lay it out when needed?

I wouldn't want to do that. We have enough flesh with the skimpy (unflattering) outfits the youth wear around here.
I spoke to my boss and she reckons we'll be able to have ceiling mounted units with ducting. Quote was about £4K, so not as much as the £20K we had been quoted.
Hopefully this will be installed before October!

Result then
You may want to buy a few 'thicker' bras to prevent "chilled-pokey-out-nipples" which aircon will almost certainly help create.....
