I was told yesterday there are plans afoot to increase the age to apply for a provisional license. Has any one else heard anything. My Son is 16 now and very keen to learn to drive. I think he'd be gutted if they made him wait a few more years. Oh and does he have to be 17 to apply for his provisional. TIA

This seems to be an old chestnut that comes around every year or so. Indeed, it came up at this time LAST year when my lad was getting ready to apply for HIS license to start on 26/08.

I went straight to the horses mouth, rang DVLA, and was told it was NOT true.

I suggest you do the same.

IIRC, he can apply for his license 6 weeks before it is due to start, or 6 weeks before he is 17, but ask them that too, 'cos I could be mistaken.

My memory's not what it used to be.

I've not heard anything 'official' about the age going up but it is something that gets talked about every once in a while - like the age of drinking goin up to 21 etc

I applied for my provisional when I was 16 but wasn't allowed on the road until I turned 17 - the provisional was valid from my birthday even though I had it in my hand a few weeks before - It was 10 years ago but I cant see them having changed it as its set up so you can start driving lessons as soon as you are 17
