Question What makes a good bar / pub ?

Apart from the obvious answers of cheap booze and loose morals of the opposite sex

I was just thinking of the nice bars I've been in, what actually makes a place good and what makes them bad ?

Nice interior
Friendly staff
No rip off prices
General atmosphere / not run down /clean and tidy
Dancefloors
Banging choons ?

etc etc

Staf... first .. last and everytime... staff who seem pleased to be at work.... cant stand them that make you feel like you are disturbing their conversation with their mate or something

Depends on what mood I'm in.

Sometimes you don't want cheap drinks as it keeps the riff raff out.

Staff!?!... pah.... I want an old fashioned 'landlord' welcoming me in for a beer, not some university ****** on the minimum wage.....

Copper topped tables are also a plus

A good pub is one where you may consider it an extension of your own home. Friendly staff and clientele, proper ale, a scenic vista and no screaming children, dandies with their matching beckham hairstyles or lowlife plebs.

Depends on who you are out with too, if I'm out with the girlfriend I look for a bit more respectable bars than if i'm out with the lads.
If it's a boys night out then anywhere that sells beer will do!

Still like my local though, first name terms with all the staff and most of the people drinking, it's good to know if you have nothing to do there will always be someone there to drink with!

A good well looked after Pint first and foremost , Good staff , Good atmosphere and clientele and NO SMOKING. Let the fools with the cancer sticks kill themselves in the privacy of their own nicotine stained hovels.

Other drinkers and staff. A place you can walk into at any time of the day/night and be welcomed by everyone in there. Thats what I like about my local.

Somewhere you can actually have a game of pool.

Is it me or are pubs not bothering with pool tables these days?

One of the reasons i hate going down town. Boring, with ****e all to do except stand there and drink.

Well yes I agree, but this is england so it is more or less compulsory now to keep scum out.
Sad as that is, it is a fact of this decaying isle.
Dont see many of the door gorillas in NY apart from ID checkers everywhere

Well I reccon you guys would love my bars !!!!!!!!

forget anything you get in the Uk. For less than £10.00 you will be "blown away " whilst having a nice cold beer . the level of "customer service" is unreal. You leave well happy !!!!!

Any pub which requires door staff is almost certainly NOT a good pub.
But many bars & clubs have to use them as part of their licence I guess.

ditto freak on this one. like to walk into a bar (not really pub person), see a good clean surrounding, plenty of space. maybe some cool lighting effects. decent music is a must for me, no r'n'b, no cheesey dance music. classic house, trance maybe. on arrival at a bar, friendly staff, male or female. like it when you say order a drink, and they reply, well we have this on special offer if your interested, good sometimes.

get to either stand up with some space or sit on said sofa/seating areas, without fear of getting bashed about by either polish pi$$heads or chavscum

andy

p.s. yet to find such a place, but gatecrasher in 05" came bloody close, even though its a nightclub

i was watching the hardest pubs in britain a while back and the bar was run by topless woman so i think thats a good starting point, but the bad news is my misses works behind a bar, actually bring in topless bar staff its been a while since ive seen them.

And you think your a detective !!!!!!!!! well Thailand is where you find lady boy bars. There isnt much call for them In AC . And they ar ecalled either "Backlas" or "Billyboys " here.

And the locals love guns Check out our shopping centers and the place is full of shotgun carrying security.

We also have a couple of m16 's just in case a plane full of Chavs turn up .

very very few problems ... most guys are to old to cause trouble and tend to be happy with a nice 18 year old on each knee.

Small and cosy,
decent beer, including a few guest ales,
log fire in winter,
no music,
and most importantly good mates.
