Talking 66 mpg!

Thought I'd take it easy on the way home from the in-laws today. 150 mile trip 90% motorway with 20 miles of this stop/start. I managed a very respectable 66 mpg as an average, well over the quoted figs. That's about 40 mpg more than I'd get from the Impreza It did take 30 mins longer than usual though. Golf mk4 tdi.

Wonder if the new Subaru diesel could match this

You'd have to be sitting at about 50-60 to do that. The best I ever got in th ereal world was around 50-55.

65-70. Never really went over 70. On big descents I'd knock it into neutral, back into 5th before I'd get to 60 mph. Kept it just over 2k revs as much as I could. Really missed the 6th gear that I used to have on the gt tdi's.

London to Manchester and back yesterday. Nearly two tankfuls - £100! I was making 'good progress' where possible. Perhaps I should get diesel?

You'd have got more leaving it in a high gear coasting downhills as the car burns fuel in neutral but not when coasting. Unless of course you'd need to accelerate to maintain speed or counter the engine braking.

I'm getting an Octavia TDi vRS soon so I'm looking forward to getting stellar mpgs!

I'd say more coasting as there is no braking affect, could coast for ages.

I done Luton to Solihull and back yesterday in the missus Golf GT TDi 1.9, its been remapped (revo'd iirc) and most of the way at around 70mph in 6th gear apart from the 40mph average speed checks where the workman were working.
Trip computer showed average of 68.9mpg when i got home.

Well chuffed!

I think the STi would have bankrupt me!

Steve Sherwen is right, modern engine management systems detect over-run and stop fuelling completely. Remember when Clarkson took that Audi A8 from London to Scotland and back on a tankfull, this is exactly what he did under advisement from the VAG technical bods.

I was using a very light foot on the go pedal, mainly because I was tired.

But still very good fuel economy, them VW PD engines are superb.

Buy a subaru and get a nice feeling that every time you put your foot down you are helping to kill penguins in the north pole

Surely coasting for a long distance is better than leaving it in gear and having to suffer from speed loss through engine braking? The trip went up significantly due to coasting but not much at all due to leaving in gear and de-accelerating.

Because polar bears live in the Arctic and penguins prefer the Southern hemisphere.

also, they can't get the wrappers off

For myself, I set the Cruse Control to 60 and let it do 1600rpm in 6th gear.
