Inland Revenue woman in my office this morning!
Had a visitor to my office this morning. . .
"Good morning Mr Builder my name is Miss Moneygrabber and I'm from the Inland Revenue, may I come in?"
Apparently someone had grassed on me for tax evasion or something like that - I didn't fully take it in at first.
Everything appears to be in order and my records are "very well documented" which was a relief 'cos I started to doubt myself for a while there as I do my own accounts.
Anyway, she's just left after nearly 4 hours of paper shuffling and she given me a
So I'm giving a to the to$$er thats just wasted my day
Is it right that they can just turn up without any warning and all because of an unfounded allegation?
At least it should keep them off my back for a while - I hope?
Think I need a couple of beers now. . .

You know some people have nothing better to do then sit there spending time on the phone, writing letters grassing people up. they do this because it gives them a sense of satisfaction and in their own sad little world some sort of purpose. Truth is they're f**k all on the outside and just gain a little sadistic pleasure trying to make other peoples lives hell.
Pathetic
I hope you find out who it is mate and go and dump 10 tons of rubble on their driveway.

Found the following info here. Not sure how current or valid it is.
Inland Revenue powers to obtain information in relation to contributions are governed by section 110ZA of the SSAA 1992. Section 110ZA was inserted by the ToFA 1999 and was derived from the provisions of section 110 as they previously applied to the then Department of Social Security in relation to contributions. The officers' powers in relation to tax are governed by section 20 of the TMA 1970.
37. The powers in relation to contributions are significantly different to those which apply in relation to tax and include the ability to:
enter premises without a warrant;
question anybody found on the premises; and
compel the provision of information and documents without first issuing a notice subject to third party scrutiny. (Requests for information for tax purposes under section 20 of the TMA 1970 are normally subject to third party scrutiny).

We have had this a couple of times and they've been booted straight out through the door - saying that my old fella is quite intimidating - normally tax inspectors are about 4'11"
If everything is in order and above board you've nothing to worry about.
saying that these f**kers seem to have more powers than the police

But she was deffo legit.
Made me really glad I'm spot on with my bookkeeping etc
I don't do anything dodgy and ALL my work goes through the books.
Even when I do work for my wifes rental properties it's all invoiced and recorded (she can claim it all back anyway)
I'm relieved it all went well, but I will be extra vigilant in future just in case of any return visits.
All I have to do now is work out who it was that grassed me up

Yes but thats the problem with HMRC - If you make an honest mistake, even something simple, they still screw you for it.
They can turn round to you and say "we think you've earned X amount so you must pay us Y in tax or else" and unless you can prove them wrong beyond any doubt, you have to pay them.
I have a mate that got stung for a hefty amount a few years ago and it very nearly bankrupted him.

I don't have a real problem with IR / HMRC or whatever they want to call themselves coming to see me,
but I had plans on working on site today, not stuck in the office not earning a penny.
I have a prime suspect for grassing me up though. . .

Think I know who was/is trying to drop me in the doo doo. . .
A few weeks ago I was doing some building work at a pizza place (during the day when it was shut)
and had parked behind the building in a space allocated to the shop, as told to by the shop owner.
The flower shop next door had its own parking space there as well,
but as the pizza place was closed during the day the flower shop staff would also use the pizza shops parking spot.
(I didn't know this at the time)
So on the day, I parked my van up at 7:30am and started work.
Around 9:00am the flower shop owner is screaming at me to move my van out of HIS space so he can park up - only he used more colourful language!
I politely pointed out the space belonged to the pizza shop and I had the owners permission to park there.
This made him furious and he was ranting and raving at me like a man possessed!
So using language that he would understand I told him to
“Get the f*ck out of my face before I rip your head from your shoulders and **** down your throat, please”
His last words to me were “I’ll f*ck you up for this”
Being somewhat smaller than me, I laughed at him and went back to work and thought no more of it until now!
It's got to be him don't you think?

I'm ripping the roof off an old garage next week. . .
Don't think I'll bother with a skip, just load it into the back of the pick up and deposit it. . . guess where
