Just out of interest, how much was it? (Seperate prices for the body and the lens, if you can!)

Was in a popular high street electrical shop (has an x in it) at lunch and there was a guy in front of me asking the ever helpful assistant about TVs.

Man: So what are your recommendations for a 32" widescreen tv
Assistant: Well I recommend the Sony here, its the only one we have
M: Whats the picture comparison between the 100Hz tvs, which are better ?
A: This ones good.
M: But which ones are sharper picture, dont suffer ghosting, etc.
A: Well all 100Hz TVs are as good as each other.
M: So other than this one here, what would you recommend.
A: Errr......this one as its the only one we have.

Man walks off, and I step up to the ockey.

Me: Do you sell digital interconnect cables to connect DVD players to AV amps ?
Assistant: I havent a clue what youre talking about.
A: Ahhh you mean scart cables dont you.
M: No I mean digital co-ax cables.
A: Scart are digital cables, it says so on the box.
M: No, they arent. Is there anyone else that may know what I am talking about.
A: No, I am the specialist in this area.

Talk about ROTFLMFAO. Havent stopped laughing since.

Hehehe

"I'm the specialist in this area" LOL

Similar experience, same shop, Heathrow terminal 3...

Punter:"What's the difference between these two ipaqs"
Git:"The memory, and USB support"
P:"But it says "USB" on both the boxes?"
G:"Does it?"
P:"Is there someone who knows about these things here?"
G:"Yes, me"
P:"Oh"
P:"Goodbye"

The thing that scares me is that some people actually *trust* these less than perfectly trained specimins...

The sales assistant exists solely to process your credit card. I gave up asking them for advice a loooooong time ago.

Blimey,
Thought it was just me - I went into an electrical shop, again beginning with the letter D (And had an X in it too!) and asked if they sold DVD writers for PC's? The young male assistant said there was no such thing so I burst out laughing,he went bright red and my other half dug me in the ribs cos I was horrible to me for laughing.........

Do your research before you buy as most shops don't have a clue what you're talkin about!

Cheers,

Nick..

Which is why it is such great news that Tempo have gone bust!!

Anybody ever bought anything from one of these places on 0% finance? My advice to you if you are even considering this is don't. Basically the deal is you pay the balance off within 12 months and it's 0% finance. If you don't settle within 12 months thet charge you 29.9% APR (How do they make a profit?). They also forget to mention they are charging you payment protection.

To cut a long story short it is almost impossible to pay it off within 12 months. There is no phone number on the agreement so you can find out how much you owe and they won't let you pay it off in the shop. When you do finally get through to the finance company (probably HFC) you must pay it off with a debit card as they do not accept credit cards...

I was in the X shop last year just about this time and this guy walks us to the local hovering 'Specialist' and said I've got a PC in the house thats a 266 thingy and am thinking of getting a new one.

Specialist(sic):- ahhh well you really need a new 600MHz job to do that.
Bloke:- All I really do is surf the net and type occasional letters
Specialist(sic):- ahhh well you really need a new 600MHz job to do that.

Bloke:- Will it make my access better.
Specialist(sic):- yes
Bloke:- make my access faster ?
Specialist(sic):- ooohh yes, this is a 600MHz and yours is only a 266MHz so its a faster PC. In fact its likely if you buy this PC that you'll never need to buy another computer for the next 10 years as this one will fulfil all your needs for the future.(at this point my jaw drops and I'm intent on hearing why, in fact I'm really tempted to join in)
Bloke:-now looking puzzled, why is that then. I mean I've only had me old one for about 18 months.
Specialist(sic):- Well its unlikley they'll make faster processors than this. And then they'll only be for specialists high power uses.
Bloke:- mmm I'm not sure I'll need to think about it more and read up.
Specialist(sic):- I'll do you a deal on this demo model, we may not have any left by the weekend !!!!

I agree with father_jack here, everyone knows that dixons is full of overpriced cack that nobody wants! I do go in there on a regular basis and ask if they have a release date for double intruder on the pc or do they have pink pounder 4 for the ps one. They even look it up! Try asking them if they have played it and what they thought of it!

IMHO the X shop is fine for low end gear. You want a cheap CD player etc etc.

High end - do your research, then just shop round for the best price.

The X shop is good for high end too tho' - have just bought a Canon EOS D30 digital SLR and 75-300mm Canon USM zoom lens from them with a 10% off special offer on both and 14 months interest free credit

...far cheaper than any specialist shop and anything (reputable or not) that I can find on the Internet.

Any other D30 owners on here?...hope to post some Scooby pics soon

Recently called into the other large electrical retailer C?m?t to measure up a 46" widescreen Toshiba.
Overheard the sales guy explaining the advantages of Dolby Digital to a punter, apparently its a lot clearer when used with digital TV.
Anyway, sales guy sees me measuring up the Tosh and comes over.
I want the Tosh because, besides features/quality, it will fit were I want it to, has a stand, the top is flat and I can get ny centre speaker on top of it.
Have to explain to sales guy about centre speakers as he hasn't got a clue.
After going through the model range on his PC he manages to find the one I'm after and quotes me £2900 with a three year warrenty.
Explain to him I can get it for £1950 with a five year warrenty from Hi-Spek, at this point he turns the PC straight off and tells me I shouldn't come into a retail store and waste there time and examine there display products if I intended to buy mail order.
Good customer relations NOT.

Conversation between myself and an unamed local Subaru dealer in November 1998. I was trying to find out the different spec between the MY1998 and MY1999 (spoiler, discs, seats etc).

Me: I'm ringing to enquire about the standard spec of the Impreza Turbo 1999 year model. Do you know what differences there are
compared to the current model?
Dealer: There isn't any.

M: Oh, I thought there were some improvements.
D: There might be yes.

M: Do you know what they are.
D: Actually, I don't think there are any.

M: Er, ok. Can you send me a brochure, or does anyone else there know?
D: There isn't any brochures and there's no-one else here.

M: I hope you don't mind me saying so, but you are not very helpful.
D: Well, either you buy these cars or you don't. We can shift them whatever coz people are queuing up for 'em. They sell themselves. There's a nine month waiting list so you pays yer money and yer takes yer choice.

Which is exactly what I did, picking my MY99 up from the next nearest (and very helpful) dealer the following March.
The best part is that the unhelpful dealership has a petrol station attached which I regularly use, and one day the owner asked me why did I not buy my vehicle from them (he'd seen the dealership sticker on the back window a few times). Needless to say I 'informed' him of his need to pay his staff with washers etc.

i work with a guy that used to run a d****S, this man has more knowledge of electrical products than is healthy!

he knows the spec of everything from ZX Spectrums to the latest Dyson washing machines. in the last few weeks he has given me advice on digital camcorders, dishwashers, amps, etc, etc. he can reel of product codes, spec lists, rrp's etc.

he is as good as his avargae 12 year old saturday staff he employed were dim.... however, he also agrees that to actually go into a store and buy something is more dim than the dim staff!

buy on line

PC World are the funniest

One day I was having a wander around PC world and was looking at PC's etc. There was an 'ARSEistant' and a couple about to buy a PC (possibly virgin PC users). Note that the RS was about 60 years old...

Anyway... picture the scene, the couple ask about the PC and the Apple Macs and the RS starts to help:-

RS: may I help you ?
Couple: yes, we are interested in a computer.
RS: ahh, this one's nice.
Couple: whats the best one to get, the apple or that one (pointing toward a PC).
RS: The apple is better.
Couple: why?
RS: they are faster and you wont need to upgrade.
Couple: oh, tell me more...
RS: an apple Mhz is the same as 4 PC Mhz. (at this point I splutter).

.... the conversation continues ...

RS: I've been here about three weeks and didn't know anything about computers but now I do. (splutter)

... the couple buy a PC (I think) ...

AND!!!
WHY? do PC world adverts claim that a faster cpu will make internet access faster??? bunch o *****! grrrr Has technology changed somehow? it would appear that modems and network cards don't even matter anymore!

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned extended warranties at these places.

The girl behind the counter couldn't understand why I didn't want to buy an extended warranty for the kettle I was buying!

Don't panic! My brother's already complained to the ASA about this one a couple of weeks ago. That should keep them busy and away from them MG-Rover adverts...

I think there is some truth to that statement, the faster your computer the quicker it can process the information being received from your modem. I have ADSL and a 1.4ghz comp, when browsing the web the pages appear instantly, however on a laptop in the office which is a 400mhz it takes a lot longer to display the page as it does on a 266mhz machine we have also (all on the same connection). Surely this has to do with the speed of the comp?

Hmm I used to work in Comet in me Uni days. Bunch of ****! People were put in positions because of when they joined the company not because of any skills they had. I was a bit miffed that as I was the last to join I was stuck moving boxes while some guy who didn't have a clue about stereos was elevated to "Expert". Two weeks latter he was trying to convince me that the Alba stereo was better than the Marrantiz because it had " Mega Bass"

Mark

PS I seem to remember that a Sales Person got more commission for selling an Extended Warranty than the actual product

This talk about Extended warranties has just reminded me that somebody I know bought a PC from Currys (without even bothering to ask me first) and paid an extra £300 for 5 years extended warranty. Bet the salesman wet himself with excitement when he saw them coming. For £300 quid you could pretty much replace most of the parts in a PC (Motherboard, Processor, RAM, Hard Drive)

Remember a few years ago I was sharing a house with friends and we needed a washing machine and as we were there only for a year we bought a cheapie £300 quid job. The salesman then tried to sell us the extended warranty for something like £170. I tried to point out to him that we didn't want it and for that money I might as well just buy a new one but he didn't seem to understand. Got to the stage where he wouldn't even sell us the washing machine until we threatened to walk.

Tim Taylor,

Sorry mate forgot aboout the TV and speaker stands.

Sold the speaker stands with my old TV as I only use the TV as a monitor.

I've bought a few bits from Hi-Spek, never had a problem. Delivery guys were first class also, had major problems getting the set in but they didn't give up and were very careful. I was going to get the 56" instead of the 46", glad I didn't, I wouldn't have got it in. Got to be a projector next I think.

Anyway here's a pic of it installed. No comments about interior decour please.

Lee

PS.

I think Richer Sounds should be commended for their warrenties. Solid state gear (amps etc.)£9.95 and moving part gear (cd players etc.) £19.95 for three year cover. At any time you can have the equipment cleaned, ther is a buy back price of 50% should you want to upgrade and if you dont claim you get you money back at the end of the term.

Makes Curry's, Comet, Dixons look a bit sick.

As an ex-superstore manager for both Currys & Halfords I can safely say, that I used to see about 85% of my staff as a liability when presented to the general public-despite the many, many hours of training invested in these people!! I've found after many years, that monkeys generally have more common sense, and quite often a higher IQ as well.
