Building help
I am looking at another BTL property, going to view tomorrow at some point, but looking at the building earlier today there was plates bolted to the outside of the house.
What is the purpose of these ? Is it to do with securing the walls or something ?
Thanks

It's internal bracing.... they'll be another one on the opposite side of the house and a flippin' great big steel rod/bar connecting the two.
Basically it's stopping the weight of the roof pushing the two walls outwards (any further)... or pulling them back straight, or stopping them going any further out of true for various reasons.
Not massively worrying, but not great news either!

They seem to be on all four walls. Will this cause problems in the future ?
The property is at a very reasonable price, it does require a very moderate refurb but nothing major.
Would the bracing affect why the house is priced competitly (sp??)

It sounds like the tie wires have rusted and snapped causing the walls to buckle
It will require new ones being drilled and screwed to prevent any further movement.

Get a structural surveyor's report done before committing yourself, sounds like the inner and outer leaves of brickwork are not connected properly and someone's done a bit of a retro-fit. Might just need the ties renewing or it might even want underpinning which would be quite an expensive job.
