Well, wife did.
Golden Labrador sitting outside our back door when she got back from the shops this evening. Bearing in mind we live a mile from the nearest village and only a couple of neighbours, who don't have Golden Labs, bit of a connundrum.
Super friendly and BIG lab but a tad smelly - maybe not surprising after being out and about. We drove around the closest village and asked about, then the larger one including the pubs, load of calls but no-one knew of anyone losing a dog like this, so we took him into the local Police station.
Hopefully someone will report him lost and be re-united but what exactly is the process here? Plod didn't know but hardly surprising @ 23:00 & night shift. Wife & I have discussed and although we don't particularly want a dog, would not want this one to have to be put down if worst came to worst.
So?

Your best bet is DogLost.co.uk Helping Reunite Lost Dogs with their Owners
Round here the police keep them until working hours then they will go to the dog wardens kennels, the police will allow you to pass your details to them and look after the dog until the owners are found instead of it being stuck in some dingy kennel.

Read my threads on Lost Dog
all the info is in there
Donna spent quite a a few days phoning round just about every dogs home, rspca, vets etc, and registered on a few lost dog forums, and scoured all the local ad's
We couldnt take him to the police station, I did phone them, but they werent that interested, and Sonic "Lost Dog" Yoda Ears, would more than likely have been put down, so we nursed him back to health and found him a fantastic new home

No collar with contact number? Labs do wander
You could take him/her to vet and see it it has a chip.
How small a village? - take a piccy and put up some notices including vets
Best of luck. d

Dog is in the cells overnight. Sprog is not too dog friendly mainly due to my parents pyschotic heinz 57
Plod couldn't find the chip reader but will get it checked in the morning. Had a collar but no name.
Wife n sprog will be making notices and dropping them into the local PO/Shop and Pubs.
We'll see

Labs do wander, they're not that bright, my old one followed some walkers for 5 miles (probably hoped they had some food!) They make good family dogs, they're very loyal and protective of kids, and will put up with kids doing anything to them.
Just to be a pedant it's a yellow lab not golden.
Good luck, hope you find the owners.

dumb as **** is nearer the mark
My sister's has tried getting into other people's car on numerous occasions after walks
PTMW If it had a collar on it's probably wandered off, as Fast Bloke says, letting the local vet's know is the easiest way of finding the owner. For some reason, that's the first place most owners will notify

Good luck
