You sure you want to go that side Alex?
A25 gets VERY busy.

Tho i supppose it means you can also get to the Tonbridge site easier (if you still go there).

I used to live near Reigate (also lived on boxhill), your best bet may be the villages out on the A25, oxted, westerham etc.

doh just seen your post above about rail..... kinda kills that a little. might be best to start looking at the railtrack site and find a place with a station with decent links.

i used to live in reigate and some areas are fairly nice, but if intending to move to reigate i would avoid areas like woodhatch, south park and doversgreen. in that area i would also avoid merstham, u could always try godstone not sure wot the rail like from there but easy enough to drive to redhill which has a main rail station. i'm a pro at the reigate area lived there for 23 years

no offence meant to anyone living in these areas

Agreed [edit; with Scoobylover] - particularly Merstham, which has talk of a major freight rail link emerging from a tunnel around there in the next few years.

Other point re rail is to check the timetable of any station on the branch line (is it Dorking to Tonbridge?) as it is not even officially in demand - let alone in practice. One Sunday afternoon there was one train every two hours from Reigate to Dorking, timetabled. That can be a long, cold wait. Reigate also benefits from Reading trains heading down to Gatwick, which you won't get on the east side.

Yes bits of Reigate are awful, but not the Hardwicke Road area

Question

All,

I am looking to relocate near to Reigate (work), and was wondering if anyone could recommend a town/village to live in along the A25 towards Sevenoaks?

As I have no idea where to start looking!?

Cheers, Alex

Cheers PHolt.. I sometimes still go to the Tonbridge site, but mainly based out of the Kingswood site between tadworth n Reigate...

I'd like to position myself roughly between the two, but still have access via rail to kingston.

Cheers, Alex

Alex, if my house sale falls through, I can offer you a place IN Reigate, private road, cute 2-bed end of terrace, etc etc... but it seems to be going quite well at the moment (touch all wooden objects within reach). No garage for your MY01 though.

Why East? Cheaper?

Can't really offer advice as I only lived in mine for about 5 months, abroad the rest of the time and otherwise new to the area. Caterham seemed to have a dodgy crime level according to the local papers. Otherwise, make sure your house is not at the bottom of a hill, or on the flat; Godstone and Redhill had a heck of a lot of flooding in the last year, with some houses becoming unsellable.

Best of luck

Alex - how abt somewhere like Bletchingley - nice village but right on A25. Edenbridge used to be good but havent been there for years. Then there is a whole host a great villages just off the A22, south of Godstone (Blindley Heath for example).

Where u working now anyway ?

By all means avoid the estate on Woodhatch, but there are some lovely houses around Woodhatch and Dovers Green. It's just got a bad rep because of the estate. One of my best mates lives up in the nice houses. I also work in Redhill and recommend that you don't try and get a house there. Loads of really nasty individuals that are best avoided. Stick to Reigate (nr Priory park if poss) and if you have any sprogs my sister-in-law could well be teaching them (as she teaches at that school).

Come and live near us - you know where. Mind you, we'd never get any sleep, the JD would forever be running out, and there aren't enough dry roasted peanuts in the world for Milly to eat

I think the biggest problem will be rail links actually as cross country rail is a bit toss at best.

I once had to train from redhill to Tonbridge and it was a chuffing (HAHA) nightmare, multiple changes and took AGES!

If necessary i would actually look south tbh as anything on that major line heading down towards brighton is ok as long as you get mainline station, which are redhill, gatwick, haywards heath.
Plus the further south you go the cheaper it gets (and gatwick express is ace to london in 40 mins non stop).

I commuted to redhill from burgess hill for about 2 years and it doesnt take that long, about 40 mins average, plus knowing where your site is you can go straight up m23, over m25 and up to kingswood over backroads, OR one junction on m25 OR up A23. loadsa choice.

If you really don't fancy that how about east grinstead?
There are one or two bad estates to avoid, it defo has rail link east (not sure about west) and is easy to get to croydon, redhill or tonbridge.

I think Pete is right Alex - your best bet is going to be the villages along the A25 - However, the better ones such as Oxted and to a lesser extent Westerham ain't cheap. They are very popular commuter areas and as such, the prices have been pushed up. If you're OK with that, then you could do a lot worse.

Best of luck

Hello

I live in Edenbridge, which is about 10 minutes from the A25 at Oxted.

A nice place, not too busy. But as stated earlier, the A25 in the morning can be a complete pain.

I don't think you are going to be able to live anywhere east of reigate and get 'easy' access by train to Kingston, it's all on the wrong line! Oxted, westerham, bletchingly..... EXPENSIVE , have you thought about Horley... nice and cheep. easy access to M25 / work, trains straight up to London.... or even Crawley (if you are brave enough )

Dr.Evil,
East of Reigate, i think the last post summed it up, go any further east and it starts getting way expensive, Dorking has good access to Kingston / London in general and is about 15 min's the opposite direction along the A25.

Boxhill is a only a mile away, the roads are fantastic, the law very forgiving (for speeding at least)and the house prices are creeping up more slowly than the surrounding area's and are currently not to heavily inflated (simular to Reigate) !!

Well thats me, my apologies for stating the obvious but i think Dorking is great !!!

Thank you all so much for the suggestions..
I suspect I may scrap the kingston access idea..

Hmm.. seems like its going to be expensive which ever place I look at

Looked at a map the other day, and I'm now considering further round the M25, but closer in to London, due to better housing costs and access to London.

.. I sure do hate moving.. ah well..

Thanks again, Alex
