if its an automated line then fine,
if its a person to person call, then lie on the floor while you make the call..
it changes the timbre of your voice, so you sound ill ( so i,m told) mind you the only time ive been in that position, i was ill, with a shagged back following a car crash

slipped on the snow, hurt ya back and it got worse overnight in bed thus can't make it in
One of the most common reasons for not coming to work, but also one of the most difficult to prove otherwise if not actually true

You should have had your interview on Monday, apparently it's the worse day of the year for 'sickies' or rather duvet days where people just can't be bothered to go into work
In the past I have booked a days holiday, and make some excuse like the kids need something, or parents day etc etc
The times when I have been 'sick' ive told them I had been up most of the night with projectile vomit, and therefore it isn't safe for me to come into work, and Ive got a doctors appointment for that morning
You could say you have had a viral thing for the last few weeks, and that the docs have phoned saying your blood test results have come back, and they need to see you quick

Say you got D&V.
Don't say flu as flu whacks you out for the best part of a week so they wouldn't expect you back for a while. Turn up 1 day later and it'll be clear you didn't have flu but a cold or skiving. D&V always going round hospitals etc. and usually ok after a day or so.

I once heard an ansaphone message at a place I w*rked, from a bloke ringing in sick:
"A wain't be in today... a've bin stabbed by 't' Lupset Mafia".
I'm not suggesting this as an option, BTW.

Nearly right
Tell them AFTER you've been offered the new job that you'd LOVE to stay BUT you have been offered a job paying (REAL NEW SALARY + 10%)
If they don't offer you the NS+10% they dont need / want you at that price so **** off to your new job.
