Audio guru's - Do I need an AV Reciever?
Think its the above I need. If it is can anyone recommend me one for upto £500
I have 5.1 surround speakers which are powered by my dvd player which is a dts decoder etc. (probably going to change these to a 6.1 or 7.1 setup)
What I want to do is connect my tv, xbox 360, hi fi and dvd player to one box which will do all the amplification and decoding etc, and maybe even THX, so that everything comes out of the speakers.
I would be connecting the tv and xbox 360 via an optical out cable, maybe the dvd player as well (I could use rca for that though) and the hi fi could be either optical out or rca.
cheers for any suggestions

yes you do IMHO
I bought a Yamaha DSPE800 about 7 years ago to perform the same task, bit only had 5.1 so wouldn't recommend it now. Must be loads of stuff available on the market now.
get what HiFi, box of tissues and dream away

I don't understand the perceived need for more than 5.1 speakers - very few DVDs encode any additional channels.
I bought a Yamaha DSP-A1 about 7 years ago, it was fantastic then and it still is today, plus you can pick them up s/h for about £300. It's a classic design that will p*ss all over a new £300 amp today - all you miss out on are the newest processing modes like Pro-Logic II.

again, it's a few years since I purchased mine, but yes the sound quality is very good.
I did notice a sound degredation when channeling pure audio through it so I connect all pure audio sources directly to a separate amp and all the AV stuff through the receiver.

Ive got all my stuff, sky+, DVD and xbox360 going into my amp, and this then connects direct to my screen via component cable, looks and sounds amazing. Playing COD3 with full 5.1 will have you ducking for cover, plus you can hear people creeping up behind you (made condemed even more scary!!) I have a denon1705 which is a great bit of kit for the money and would def recommend one, easy to use and set up. Yamaha as already mentioned are also very good.

thanks guys
(bit hard finding this thread as it keeps moving)
think I am going to go for either a Pioneer VSX1016 or a Sony STRDA 1200 both for £399 (can get cheaper by shopping around) they both appear to be capable of what I will use it for (the hdmi interface is a plus as well)

I decently upgraded my home cinema system, make sure your speakers are compatable with the receiver as my sub hasn't got an amp built-in which is needed with my receiver.
I bought a Denon 1507 but my budget was only £250.
