LOL - Good stuff.... Dome bid was doomed the minute Prescott's name was even vaguely associated with it IMO.
Blackpool would have been a great option - better than the Dome - but I'm glad Manchester has it... gives people an excuse to go there now!

Whats wrong with casinos really? some people have gambling problems but does that mean other people should be denied the fun of a casino? Some people have alcohol problems does that mean we ban alcohol? Casino or not, those with gambling problems will only find another way of losing the money.

Much like drug addiction, problem gamblers will often turn to anything to get their fix. Expect a massive increase in crime as people turn to theft/burglary to fund their habit.
This will also be accompanied by a huge increase in associated industries - prostitution, loan sharking and money laundering all go hand in hand with casinos.
Apart from this there will be the large numbers of problem gamblers who will lose all their possessions and homes, sometimes without their wife or kids even knowing about it.
And then they'll be the obligatory headlines about babies left in cars while their parents are inside gambling.
Only two winners here - the casino and the government.
Edit to add : Based on stats from US/Aus, 5% of casino visitors are problem gamblers and contribute 50% of the casino's income. For every problem gambler there are on average 7 other people effected. It may be a minority but it's a huge problem.

With internet gambling taking off massively, I'm not sure I understand this. I think these days a casino is as much about the "experience" as it is about gambling; much as these days the only pubs that make money are the ones who serve food. I've been to Estoril casino a few times, never gambled a cent.

Everywhere in the world where they open a new casino, regardless of the gambling laws already existing, there is a massive increase in the associated problems.

Actually one of the worst things for me personally was the effect it had on local entertainment.
It does suck money from pubs and clubs. The Crown casino in Melbourne has a devastating effect on local live music for example.

I went in knowing I would lose money, but looking at it as paying a price for entertainment in a controlled way.

Probably the best example of how things get out of hand the good old lottery.Once, one pound on a Saturday,now...
Pensioners queueing up to spend their pension on a fantasy
"These three lines for tonight and 'Three Lucky Sevens' scratch cards please oh,'and two of the 'Lucky Pirate' scratch cards too,oh and a lucky dip for tonight,oh and two for euromillions and some hot picks and yes I will have the dream number please....
and this 38 pence pint of milk"
"That will be £38.38p out of your weeks pension thankyou "
And there are millions of the buggers clogging up counters every blooming day
