Default Insurance type question..... do i/we claim or not.....

Right, a 'mate' of mine had a slight incident this morning with a car coming the other way, basically the road wasn't wide enough for two cars, and one slid into the other, niether were stationary at the time of impact......

So, the damage is relatively minor, my 'mates' excess is £200, don't know what the other chaps is, but it'll be at least £100..... i reckon the other car can be fixed professionaly for less than £300... and 'my mates' can be fixed for under 100........

So, first up, do they BY LAW, have to tell the ins co even if they decide to call it 'one of those things' and repair their own cars......

Or the way i see it, it may have an adverse effect on both sets of insurance even if there are no claims made....

Please don't try and apportion blame, it was one of those things.....

Your opinions would be appreciated.... my 'mate' is worried about his no claims discount.......

Thanks.

might aswell get it repaired himself if he's worried about his no claims when my sat nav got nicked i could of claimed but it would then put my insurance up a extra 600 and lose my no claims too! so i decided not to claim

AFAIK, you are not required by law to tell them if you decide that you are going it alone. The Police are the onlyones that require telling, and that is only if someone is hurt as a result of the crash, or if there is any damage to council property, roadsigns, barriers etc.

For that amount of damage, I'd try not to and settle it outside the insurance, as you'll prob pay over that in the next few years as a result of the claim.

Just heard from my mate, sadly the other car was a company car, and he has had to inform his boss's......

So, if the ins co call it 50/50, who pays for what, ie, will my mates ins co pay for his car to be fixed, or will the ins co's pay for the damage on the other cars etc....??

Anyway, my mates car is tpf&t, so surely his won't get fixed either way??

if its 50 50 you claim for your own car!
being a company car surley they wont mind a quick settlement in the bodyshop??
afterall its probably quicker than waiting for insurance company!
Failing that get ya mate to tell police he could smell alcohol on the other drivers breath lol!
