Default where are today's sports superstars?

As they are just celebrating Mohammed Ali's 65th birthday, I was wondering where today's sports superstars are.

I'd probably rate a superstar as a player you would watch even if you aren't a fan of the sporting code

I suppose Tiger Woods and Shane Warne might fall into the category, but they're not as exciting to watch as the likes of Teofilio Stevenson, Pele or George Best

Am I missing something, or just showing my age ?

Your age - and I bet I am older than you

They are still dotted about and there have been a handful since the Ali era. You might be right about today but in recent past - Brian Lara, Federer, Wilkinson and Lomu (Rugby), Killy (skiing, spelling?), Lauda, that swimmer with 7 golds and umpteen others whose names escape me!

Not forgetting Wayne Rooney of course Beckham might even get in the list?

Ricky Hatton?

Like him or Loathe him David Beckham whilst on the pitch, as with a few other footballers even if you dont like the sport they are well respected within it.

I dont really follow rugby but Im sure there are a few top players in our camp. If he ever gets fit again, Johnny Wilkinson for one.

Jonathon Edwards

Also Muhammed Ali wasnt British so looking over the whole world there are plenty of top names that can be admired as to what they have achieved. Cant be bothered thinking of a top name from every sport so I'll leave it at that but I think your just having a victor meldrew moment.

Superstar, hero, ect.
The words no longer have any meaning they have been cheapened so!
Perhaps sport is avalible on a larger scale and it is more difficult to find that standout performer in such a wide aray of sports?

oh, yeah - you're probably right; Jonah Lomu was good to watch (and how good would he have been without his chronic kidney problem?)
and Schumacher has an awesome record

OK - I think you are probably right on that one It's just that I am biased when it comes to Rugby. On the other hand you could say that even if only for a short ime they were at the top of their sport.

I suppose the real heroes are the one that stayed at the top end for many seasons like Ali, Nicklaus and Schumacher.

I refuse to mention snooker or darts

Fair enough then, i should have said "most"! And i completely agree about Mr. Armstrong, he has to be one of if not the most amazing athletes ever.

Moustachioed Mark Spitz, or the new Thorpedo?

Key thing is, define a superstar? Is it simply someone brilliant at what they do, for a long time - or is it someone who has a bit of public persona also? Frank Bruno (there, that should raise some chuckles...)

Michael Jordan - excellent example.

Agree Lance must be one of the most impressive atheletes ever to have lived, have you read his book?
If you've suffered the big C the book is mazing, even if you havent its still a must read.

He's definitely HERO material.

By the way the book is called "its not about the bike"
