Default Whats Leeds like?

Ok anyone know Leeds well?

I'm being relocated from High Wycombe to Leeds in the next few weeks, so I need to know what area's are ok for getting a shared house in and which area's to avoid!!

I'm looking for an area where theres some nightlife, but fairly nice housing with off-street safe parking can be got.

Anyone recommend anywhere?

I'm going to have to get used to speaking without using the word "the" as well!

For night life you need to speak to David Wallis.

There is plenty of it in Leeds. Also bear in mind that the nice bits of Leeds are not quite as cheap as is often believed by Southerners. Moderate areas can be very good value.

I worked at the Uni for two years until last summer and although the nightlife is pretty good I'd struggle to recommend any 'nice' residential areas within the city limits. Look outside and commute is my advice and tend towards the East and North rather than the West and South. That's a bit vague I know but there's not a lot else to say really. Harrogate's ok.

I lived in Headingley for a year, loved living in Leeds it was so much fun.
Don't live there though it's full of students haha

Look at York, Harrogate, Barnsley (yeah there are some nice parts!) Huddersfield etc

Give us some info about yourself. Age, types of places you like going out to, gf or family in tow?

Thanks for all the info, keep it coming

I'm 26 with no bird or family in tow, so looking for somewhere near to the nightlife! I do need somewhere with safe parking however, so area's where its all terraces with on-street parking are out really.

Sounds like Headingly seems the best bet so far...

Nah don't worry about the cost as there's a house price crash about 5 years overdue don't you know so it'll all be cheap as chips soon

Get a place in the centre then.

Loads of them now and they'll hold/increase their value well.

Headingley would provide a lot of fun nights out and plenty of tallent. There are a good few flats up there with off road parking but also a lot of student houses and terraced houses as you say.

Chapel Allerton aint bad. Also got some decent bars.

You can head into the centre at weekends.

Or you could look to get a city centre flat. The Calls is the area I'd head for nightlife.

Just imagine if you had bought a house 3 years ago instead of bitching about the impending crash.

You'd be able to get an X5 and relocation expenses

I certainly wont be buying a place there - at least not yet... might get a few repo's in a few years if theyre going really cheap

Just looked on the map and Headingly is pretty close to the centre, and also doesnt look too far from my new office either which is just South of the centre so thats defo number 1 target at the moment. I'll have to go and check the area out first hand I think

Hopefully I'll be able to get somewhere with either off-street parking or a garage. Dont want students running over my car every night, or putting bollards on it etc!

Just South of the centre depending on budget look at a riverside flat by the calls. Most have underground parking and you'll have to deal with a lot less traffic to get to work. You may be able to walk depending where it is you work.

If you fancy Headingley, then make it the north part. Too near to Hyde Park and you'll be in student land which had the highest levels of residential burglary and car crime in Britain.

I made the error of living near student land a good few years ago and my car was screwed on a weekly basis, along with everyone else's in the street. And half the houses had been done over too.

If you can afford it, A flat with secure car-parking in or near the centre would be the best bet . Leeds city centre is bad for commuting by car , although the trains are pretty reliable .
Personally I wouldn't want to live in Headingley , as been said -too close to Hyde park an Burley .. rough as ****

We went down to Leeds to watch Chelsea v Leeds once. We stayed in a hotel between Leeds and Wakefield. Asked the receptionist were was best for a lads night out in Leeds - She said you'd be better off going to Wakefield.

We enjoyed it .

Leeds is, for want of a better word, a dunderhole.

Blackened by the industrial revolution, the locals are dour, miserable people preoccupied with money, or lack thereof and the rest are immigrant scum.

Ive lived on the outskirts of Leeds for over 30 years and actually agree with that statement !

Not too sure what a dunderhole is though .

Put it this way, it's not good. A cesspit, a sh*t hole, a festering den of iniquity if you will.

Personally, I'd look at commuting into Leeds over living there, look on the outskirts for houses etc

I lived in Leeds for four years - for the first year I was in the city centre and hated it, then spent the other three years in Chapel Allerton and Moortown - both really nice places but within easy reach of the centre.
