Default Animal Cruelty.

Saw this on the news this evening and was appalled.

BBC NEWS | England | Cambridgeshire | Brothers guilty in fat dog trial

Ok, so it could be argued that they were feeding it out of love, and in fact I think their argument in court was that due to ill health, the only happiness the dog had was eating!! They apparently fed the dog painkillers when they could no longer afford to take him to the vets for a chronic ear infection.

But to allow the dog to become that big, to the point it couldn't walk or breath properly is cruel.

I don't think it is right that they should be allowed to have the dog back - they can keep Rusty subject to the condition that he does not regain the weight he has lost. It has cost the RSPCA £3000 to look after him, and get his weight down by 2 stone.

I just hope that the dog is kept an eye on by the RSPCA.

I reckon that this country cares more about animals than humans.

There are plenty of fat kids around.....do the parents get taken to court?

Valid point LG but at least they weren't subjecting him to physical abuse which is what usually one sees in situations of animal cruelty.

True - though as I said they probably saw it as an act of love, but it is still cruel

Makes you think though.. plenty of cases re neglect and starvation but it's rare to see the opposite being taken further

A woman I work with overfed her dog. He got better food than her husand. Poor dog had to be put to sleep, he developed all sorts of problems. Was only young too

Is it any less cruel though if it makes the dog's life such a misery?

humans will be humans

the rest of the animals on this planet would do a hell of a lot better without us...

No, but I was just pointing out you don't see much of the overweight cases..

Are you trying to make me look mean?

As I understand it, the dog was owned by two elderly brothers. Sure, they love their dog, and now have him back, somewhat lighter. Problem is, they're both a bit simple and it'll be the size of a horse again before long.

And of course they couldn't afford vets' bills - do you know how much three kilos of fillet steak costs per day

I look at this case and don't feel sad for the dog. strange that as i'm always first to jump on the bandwagon YET if it was mistreated or starved i'd be .

Personally there's far worse stuff going on with animals- 1000s are put down everyday/drowned etc so why is this hitting headlines?
